Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with soft-close doors and have several questions regarding proper installation. In particular, I am interested in how to correctly adjust the hinges on the soft-close doors so that they not only close smoothly but also function reliably over time. I am also wondering if there are any specific recommendations about the order of assembly—for example, whether the cabinet carcasses should be fully assembled before attaching the doors, or if it is better to do this simultaneously. I have the instructions on hand, but I find the details on the soft-close mechanisms and precise adjustments to be quite brief.

Does anyone have experience with the accurate assembly of these cabinets and tips on how to avoid mistakes? Are there any tricks to ensure the doors are aligned evenly? I would really appreciate a detailed explanation, as I want to avoid any errors as much as possible. Thanks in advance!

Regarding the adjustment of soft-close hinges, I can add that IKEA offers a standard three-screw adjustment system:

- The lateral screw adjusts the door horizontally.
- The vertical screw controls the height.
- The depth screw sets the closing pressure and therefore the soft-close function.

This method is universal, but beginners sometimes tend to overtighten the depth screw, which can impair the damper function. I recommend testing the function beforehand and tightening gradually if necessary, rather than applying full force right away.

Also, when hanging the door, make sure the hinge is fully engaged in the cabinet frame. This ensures even pressure on the dampers.

For soft-close hinges, you should make sure they are properly installed – they need to be fully clicked in for the damping function to work correctly.

That makes sense. Is it critical whether the hinges sit flush or have a slight play when testing the soft-close function? And for walls that aren’t perfectly straight – are there any recommendations on whether to use shims or similar to align the cabinet perfectly?

I’m especially interested in how to adjust the doors neatly to the fronts without them either rubbing or having too much gap.

Yes, it is quite critical. The hinges must be flush and secure because only then can the dampers properly cushion the closing process. Play in the hinges leads to uneven stress on the mechanism and can cause premature wear of the system.

Regarding the walls: Especially with minor unevenness, I recommend using mounting wedges or shims to level the carcass. This prevents doors from hanging crooked or sticking. It’s worth working carefully with a spirit level here and investing a bit more time in the assembly. There are also special furniture potentiometers that allow for height adjustment.

Have you already measured how uneven the surface is? This is important to decide which measures are appropriate.

Thank you for the detailed explanations! Yes, I measured a small deviation between 3 and 5 mm (0.1 and 0.2 inches) along the length. I figured this will need to be leveled out at the cabinet base; otherwise, everything will end up crooked.

Does it make sense to use the adjustable feet of the cabinets for this, or would it be better to use wooden shims? Is there anything to watch out for with the feet, especially regarding the Metod cabinets?

The adjustable legs of the Metod cabinet frames are perfectly suitable for compensating unevenness of up to several millimeters. These legs are sturdy and allow precise height adjustment without causing the cabinet body to wobble.

You can use wooden wedges additionally if the unevenness is more pronounced in certain spots. However, you should make sure to place the wedges so that they do not compromise stability and the cabinet body remains perfectly level.

As a general rule: use the legs first to level the cabinet, and only use wedges if necessary. Before fully tightening the assembly screws, double-check that everything fits perfectly.

Very important: Take your time! Soft-close doors require a bit of patience, especially when adjusting them. 🙂

Once you have measured everything, you will really appreciate how neatly the doors close. It’s really satisfying to see how perfectly the mechanism works.

Also: Don’t get hung up on small mistakes, they can happen to anyone. Just stay calm, you’ll handle it easily!
