Hello everyone,

I recently installed a new kitchen with Ikea Metod drawers. I noticed that some of the drawers stick or do not slide smoothly when opening and closing. I suspect that the rails may not be properly aligned, or perhaps the drawer runners are slightly warped.

What are the most common causes for Metod drawers sticking after installation?
And what specific steps can I take to fix the problem myself?
Are there any special considerations I should keep in mind when adjusting or realigning the rails?

I look forward to your experiences and practical advice. Thanks in advance!

Often, jamming occurs because the slides are not parallel or properly inserted.

- Pull the drawer out completely.
- Check that the drawer slides are securely fastened.
- Realign them if necessary.
- Make sure no screws are loose.

This usually solves the problem.

The issue of "sticking Ikea Metod drawers after assembly" is complex and requires careful inspection of individual components.

- First, the assembly instructions should be followed very closely, as an incorrect sequence often leads to problems.
- It is important to ensure the Metod rails are precisely aligned: Are the upper and lower rails exactly horizontal and parallel? Even slight deviations of a few millimeters (inches) can cause friction.
- The drawer front must be properly installed, as a slightly twisted or off-center front panel changes the sliding direction.
- Screws should be tightened by hand, not overly tight, to avoid warping the material.
- I recommend treating the sliding rails with some silicone spray or a suitable lubricant before assembly.
- Check whether the drawer meets any edge or binding when sliding—sometimes the cabinet carcasses are slightly warped.

If possible, please describe more specifically at which point the sticking occurs—at the start of opening, in the middle, or when fully extended? How does the drawer bottom behave? Are multiple drawers affected or only specific ones?

These details help to make an accurate diagnosis.

Basically, jamming of Metod drawers usually occurs due to the following reasons:

- Incorrect installation of the telescopic slides, which are not mounted precisely at the specified height or are slightly misaligned.
- Improper adjustment of the drawer fronts, causing the edges to rub against each other.
- Different materials react differently to installation variations in weight; some adjust slightly over time.

My tip: Check the alignment of the guide rails with a spirit level. The drawers must run perfectly straight.

Additionally, after installation, the drawers should be gently moved up and down fully along the side (on the outer frame) and carefully aligned. Many signs of jamming then disappear because the hinges and slides settle.

If the problem occurs only with individual drawers, there may also be a manufacturing defect or a slightly warped cabinet frame.

Hello Mejonte64,

I had similar issues with Ikea Metod drawers myself and would like to suggest a step-by-step approach:

1. Fully pull out the drawer and relieve any load.
2. Install the slide rails: Use a spirit level to check that they are installed perfectly horizontal.
3. Make sure the slide screws are positioned in the center and not too close to the edge to avoid material deformation.
4. Check the plastic clips and end stops that prevent jamming.
5. Place the drawer bottom on a flat surface to detect any warping.
6. Carefully mount the front panel and adjust it using the built-in adjustment screws (top/bottom and left/right).

It is important not to apply too much force during adjustment, as the panels can tear out.

Additionally, test whether the drawer only jams when fully extended or also when partially opened, as this gives clues about the cause.

If it jams severely, I recommend lightly lubricating the slide rails with a dry lubricant to attack dust and dirt without damaging the mechanism.

If you can provide more details about the construction status or the screws used, I can offer more specific help.

I can definitely relate; the jamming is really annoying and can be quite frustrating. I’ve personally experienced this several times with IKEA Metod drawers, and often it helped me to simply be patient and proceed step by step in a systematic way.

Some points where jamming occurs only develop over time with regular use of the drawers. Especially the initial opening can feel different.

I would also be interested to know if Mejonte64 feels that the jamming improves or worsens over time? That could provide important clues as well.
