Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: I own an IKEA Metod kitchen and would like to replace the drawer fronts myself, as having a company do the installation has become quite expensive, and I am reasonably skilled with DIY projects. My specific question is: Is it technically and mechanically possible to replace the drawer fronts or complete drawers of the Metod series on my own without much effort? Are there common pitfalls to watch out for, especially regarding the hinges, drawer slides, or fastenings? I would appreciate any tips or personal experiences.

Yes, you can replace the drawers yourself with IKEA Metod. The drawer fronts can usually be unscrewed easily and new ones screwed back on. It is important that you have the correct measurements and do not damage the drawer slides.

Your question is well posed, as there are indeed different systems with Metod. Basically, the drawer fronts are attached from the front using clips or screws, depending on the model. If you want to completely replace the drawer, you need to release the drawer slides, which is usually easy thanks to release mechanisms. Common pitfalls are:
- Incorrect dimensions of the new fronts
- Improper installation of the soft-close mechanism
- Loss or twisting of mounting clips

I recommend measuring everything precisely before removal and, if needed, downloading the IKEA assembly instructions as a PDF. This provides a good overview of the individual steps.

Replacement is feasible. Remove the front panel, pull out the drawer, and install the new one according to the instructions. Be careful with the drawer slides, as they are delicate.

Thanks in advance for the previous answers! I’m curious if anyone has specific experience with the installation, especially with larger drawers (60 cm (24 inches) wide and above). Are there any differences in handling, or are the drawer slides constructed differently based on size? The soft-close feature is also new to me—how does the adjustment work? I want to avoid any rubbing or sticking after installation.

Yes, the width does matter. For drawers 60 cm (24 inches) wide and larger, the slides are often double-armed or reinforced to support the weight. This means you need to be a bit more careful during installation, as the components move more and the extension needs to be stable. Adjusting the soft-close mechanism usually involves small screws on the slides, which allow you to set the braking force or hook tension. It’s worth testing this before final installation to avoid friction or rubbing.
