Hello everyone,

I have the following problem: My IKEA KALLAX shelving unit experienced water damage (most likely from a nearby leaking container) and has since swollen in several areas and become noticeably warped. The fiberboard shows visible deformation where affected, and the water exposure has caused the material to expand unevenly. My specific question is: What can be done to salvage the swollen KALLAX unit or at least minimize the damage? Is it worth trying repairs involving drying, sanding, and sealing, or is it better to replace individual parts? Are there special repair techniques for this type of furniture, which is made from pressed fiberboard with a melamine coating? I would appreciate any tips that help stabilize its condition after drying without the unit becoming completely unstable or visually compromised.

Basically, the KALLAX is made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which can swell quickly when exposed to moisture. The most important thing is to dry it very slowly to prevent further cracking. Ideally, disassemble the unit completely if possible, and store any loose boards in a well-ventilated, warm, dry place.

Afterwards, I would carefully sand the swollen material to smooth out uneven areas, but not too deeply to maintain stability. After sanding, it is recommended to treat the surfaces with a water-repellent wood varnish or a special sealant to protect against further moisture.

If the warping is severe and the boards are visibly distorted, replacing individual panels might be a better solution. Although IKEA does not officially provide spare parts for KALLAX, compatible particleboard panels can sometimes be found at hardware stores. It is especially important to check the frame and connection points carefully, as these determine the overall stability of the shelf.

I would need a few more details: Approximately how large is the swollen area? Are the load-bearing elements affected, or more the back panel and shelves? Have you already used wood filler for minor uneven spots?

Disassemble the shelving unit, allow the boards to dry slowly, then sand and paint them. If there is significant warping, it is better to replace the parts.

I have the following problem: My IKEA KALLAX shelf was exposed to water damage ... and since then it has swollen and become warped.

In such a case, I consider the following important: remove the moisture thoroughly and permanently, because only after assuming complete drying can you consider whether a repair makes sense. Minor swelling in KALLAX panels can often be fixed with light sanding and sealing. If the shelf is unstable due to warped panels, I recommend replacing the panels, as the design only allows limited stability after damage.

Also: after repairs, do not place the shelf again in a moisture-prone area, or the same problem will occur. A waterproof base can help. Ultimately, the approach also depends on how much time you want to invest and what level of appearance you expect.

Oh, I totally know that feeling! My KALLAX also got wet once, and at first, I thought it was ruined 🙁 But don’t worry! If you carefully take the shelf apart and let it dry slowly, you can really save it. After that, sand it a bit, fill any small holes or uneven spots with wood filler, and then apply a suitable sealant. That worked great for me!

The important thing is to take your time – don’t rush anything. If you’re not confident, just check if you can get replacement shelves, as IKEA or hardware stores often have good options. I then placed my shelf in a dry spot away from any water exposure and started using coasters for my vases ;-)

Chin up, a KALLAX is tougher than you think! 🙂
