Hello everyone,

I am considering using an Ikea Kallax shelf unit as a stand for my aquarium. The aquarium will be placed in an older apartment, and I am mainly concerned about stability, moisture damage, and the overall load-bearing capacity of the furniture. My Kallax has the standard dimensions and is supposed to support an 80cm (31.5 inches) tank holding about 100 liters (26 gallons) of water. Has anyone gained experience with how reliable such a shelf is under the specific conditions of an older building (often uneven floors, possibly higher humidity, old insulation)?

I would like to know if the Kallax is actually stable enough, what modifications might be recommended (reinforcements, moisture protection measures), and if you can suggest any alternatives with better durability.

General opinions and experiences regarding the Kallax as an aquarium stand, especially in older buildings, are welcome so I can properly assess the risk. Thanks in advance!

Honestly, a Kallax isn’t a real piece of furniture construction that can carry loads like a tested aquarium stand system. In older buildings with uneven floors, it’s even more of a risky choice. Sure, Ikea designs them well enough for books and decorations, but water weight and moisture—those don’t really mix well.

What I mean is: if you want to be safe, you should either do a solid renovation yourself or choose something else altogether.

Sometimes designs are just overstretched by hobby aquarists because they’re cheap.

Kallax can hold up if the floor is properly leveled and moisture protection is installed. Reinforcement, such as placing boards underneath or applying a sealant, is recommended. Avoid exposing the wood to direct moisture.

Hello,

I partly agree, but I would also like to point out some technical aspects that are often overlooked. First of all, the Kallax shelf is basically designed to carry static loads along the vertical panels. This means: bookshelves, decorations, etc. However, the load capacity for flat, point loads, such as a heavy aquarium on a single shelf, can vary greatly and depends on the number and position of the intermediate shelves.

Before you use it, I definitely recommend reinforcing the shelf with additional supports. For example, a plywood board (at least 18 mm (0.7 inches) thick) can be placed as a layer between the aquarium and the shelf. This board distributes the load much better, prevents deformation of the shelf panel, and creates a flat surface – which is especially important in older buildings with uneven floors.

Furthermore, what you should definitely check is whether the floor in your older apartment is really level. Uneven loads significantly increase the risk of warping or material failure. You might need additional shims or wedges to fully level the shelf.

Regarding moisture, I recommend sealing all surfaces of the Kallax that come into contact with water, especially the areas that touch the interior walls and the bottom of the shelf. A good waterproof wood sealant or durable varnish can help a lot.

What about the humidity in the room? Older buildings often have greater fluctuations. You can balance this somewhat with dehumidifiers.

I’m looking forward to your further details: What exactly does your Kallax look like? How heavy is the tank including water? Will you place filtration equipment in the cabinet below?

Best regards!

Kallax can bear a certain load, but extra caution is needed with aquariums. Reinforce the base, ensure proper sealing, and do not rely solely on the furniture. In older buildings, also pay attention to structural stability.

Thanks for the detailed information! My Kallax is the standard model with 4x4 compartments, so 77x77 cm (30x30 inches) and 39 cm (15 inches) deep. The aquarium is a standard 80 cm (31 inch) long tank with 100 liters (26 gallons), so about 100 kg (220 lbs) plus equipment.

I plan to place some of the filtration equipment underneath, mainly the filter and CO2 system, so I need to create some space in the shelving. The equipment should stay dry, so moisture protection is a key concern for me.

My floor isn’t perfectly level; I still need to check it precisely with a spirit level, but I don’t want to use shims to trick anyone if it becomes unstable.

Some sealing is definitely advisable. I am concerned, however, whether the Kallax will remain stable over time, as I live in an older building that might have some moisture issues. Any tips on sealing products or additional reinforcements would be appreciated!
