Hello everyone,

Over the past few weeks, I have repeatedly encountered the problem that the dimensions of my KALLAX shelf unit never quite fit perfectly in the end, even though I followed the instructions carefully and measured everything precisely. In some cases, the external dimensions differ by a few millimeters, which causes issues especially when mounting on walls with very little clearance.

My question to you: Have you had similar experiences where the KALLAX dimensions from IKEA are not 100% accurate? And how do you handle this in terms of making a complaint?

Is it possible to expect a repair or replacement, or is this more likely normal for this product and must be compensated for by tolerances? I would appreciate hearing about your experiences and any tips on how to proceed.

The KALLAX system is generally quite sturdy in design, but I can confirm your experience: there are manufacturing tolerances that can range from about +/- 2 to 5 mm (0.08 to 0.2 inches). These result from varying tool sizes during production, material expansion, and the coating process of the particle boards.

If you are mounting exactly against a wall, these deviations can quickly become an issue. Two things are important here: First, check whether you can rule out installation errors (for example, an uneven wall or floor), and second, verify whether the product itself shows visible defects or misplaced pre-drilled holes.

Regarding complaints: IKEA naturally offers a warranty, but small dimensional deviations in wood-based furniture are often not considered valid reasons for a claim if the function is not impaired. However, if you, for example, cannot properly fit screws or dowels, or if the shelf is unstable, it is worth contacting customer service for a possible repair or replacement.

Can you specify exactly how many millimeters the measurements differ? And where on the shelf? Exterior dimensions, interior measurements, or the position of the compartments?

This is partly due to the material and manufacturing processes. The boards are cut from large MDF or particle boards, which are delivered in full sheets and then cut down. The coating (melamine film) can expand or shrink slightly with heat and humidity, which leads to varying dimensional changes over time.

Storage and transport conditions also play a role: if the packages became damp, the material can warp slightly.

Take a close look especially at the corner joints and rows of drill holes – these often reveal how stable the system really is.

If the deviations clearly exceed 5 mm (0.2 inches) or affect functionality, a complaint is definitely justified. I once had a KALLAX unit with a slightly uneven panel – IKEA promptly sent me a replacement. It’s important to be polite and provide exact measurements when contacting customer service.

I didn’t have any issues with the measurements, but generally speaking:

:-) With my last two KALLAX shelves everything was great, but honestly, I always allowed a bit of extra space and didn’t measure down to the millimeter. Sometimes a bit of patience helps, especially with DIY furniture where a little flexibility is often needed.

Of course, if it really doesn’t fit, something needs to be done. Maybe you can place a thin strip of foam or felt between the furniture and the wall if there’s only a difference of a few millimeters. That can make the installation much easier. 🙂

The coating (melamine foil) can easily swell or shrink when exposed to heat and moisture

This is a very important point. Especially in poorly ventilated rooms or wet areas, these materials can swell, which then affects the overall dimensions.

I would also recommend carefully checking all measurements again before assembly. Take a tape measure and measure all edge panels, shelves, and back panels precisely. Often, it is not the external dimensions but a misaligned partition that causes problems.

Regarding complaints: I personally had a case with IKEA where one side panel of a shelf was noticeably warped. After simple contact, the customer service sent a replacement without any hassle. This is definitely an option in case of significant dimensional deviations.

Thank you for the quick and detailed responses so far!

I took more precise measurements of the situation: The external dimensions were sometimes about 7 mm (0.3 inches) wider than specified, which can already be critical for wall mounting. The depth, however, barely changed.

The wall itself is perfectly straight, checked with a spirit level. The shelf is placed on a level floor (parquet, no irregularities). The drill holes for the connecting screws were reasonably accurate, but the frame has more tolerance than expected.

Grab your tape measure and measure all the edge panels carefully
– I tried that without success. It looks like a manufacturing issue affecting all edges, not just one.

Tomorrow I will contact IKEA customer service and hopefully arrange for a correction. I’ll keep you updated!
