ᐅ KALLAX dimensions never quite match up in the end – should I file a complaint?

Hello everyone,

Over the past few weeks, I have repeatedly encountered the problem that the dimensions of my KALLAX shelf unit never quite fit perfectly in the end, even though I followed the instructions carefully and measured everything precisely. In some cases, the external dimensions differ by a few millimeters, which causes issues especially when mounting on walls with very little clearance.

My question to you: Have you had similar experiences where the KALLAX dimensions from IKEA are not 100% accurate? And how do you handle this in terms of making a complaint?

Is it possible to expect a repair or replacement, or is this more likely normal for this product and must be compensated for by tolerances? I would appreciate hearing about your experiences and any tips on how to proceed.

I will contact IKEA customer service tomorrow

That is definitely the right approach.

To prepare, I recommend documenting all measurements in writing again and noting your exact deviations. Record all relevant details such as the purchase date, item number, and the numbers of the affected parts.

IKEA is usually accommodating when the complaint is well justified.

If you encounter a refusal, you can also refer to the European consumer protection directive, which covers such defects in new products.

Fingers crossed that it goes smoothly! 🙂

For additional legal clarification:

The statutory warranty rights within the EU require that goods with defects must be repaired or replaced free of charge (e.g., Section 437 of the German Civil Code).

Dimensional deviations that limit usability or render the product defective fall under this regulation.

Therefore, I recommend communicating the exact discrepancy clearly and systematically to IKEA customer service and explicitly referencing this warranty if it is not accepted immediately.

It is also best to document your correspondence. This way, you will be prepared in case of a dispute.

This is definitely beyond common manufacturing tolerances – 7 mm (0.3 inches) suggests a more significant production issue.

If you are in contact with IKEA, mention whether you have already assembled the shelf or if the problem was visible before assembly. If it’s assembled, it might be more difficult to file a complaint with IKEA, as installation errors cannot be ruled out.

Alternatively, I have found that dealing with the local store can sometimes be easier because you can speak directly to a store manager. Another tip: insist on providing exact measurements when reporting the issue to customer service and do not accept general statements.

Good luck!

I fully agree with that! And if you stay polite, it usually works out very well.

Sometimes the service reps really say things like, "That’s normal, you just have to live with it." In those cases, you should stand your ground and ask again if a product with a 7mm (¼ inch) deviation is really considered "normal" by IKEA. ;-)

I hope they don’t brush you off, otherwise the forum’s love for IKEA might quickly turn into an internet forum meltdown 🙂

A brief update from my side:

The customer service at IKEA was actually very accommodating. After I explained the situation and provided a detailed numbering of the affected parts, they offered to send a replacement part, which I think is very fair.

Despite the tolerances, it is important to me that IKEA takes responsibility when deviations significantly affect the function or assembly.

Thank you for your tips and support, I’m glad that such issues can usually be resolved through clear communication! 🙂

Great, that sounds like a good outcome! 🙂

Sometimes, precise documentation and clear communication are exactly what it takes for manufacturers to realize how important even small details are to us.

I think such a nice shelving unit deserves a perfect fit – that way, organizing and decorating becomes twice as enjoyable 😉 Enjoy your KALLAX!
