Specifically, I am interested in how to improve its stability, which materials are suitable for a work surface, and whether the Besta system is even appropriate for more heavy-duty workshop tasks or if it is too fragile for that. The Besta shelf is not really designed for use as a workbench. To use it as a workbench, I recommend attaching a sturdy worktop to it and securing the modules together to prevent wobbling.

For the countertop, you can choose multiplex plywood or a thick MDF board. Screw the board firmly onto the shelving unit. For additional stability, attach real feet or metal brackets underneath.
