Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my Kallax shelf from Ikea: despite careful maintenance and normal use, the coating starts peeling off after just a few months. I have followed all recommended cleaning methods, do not use any harsh products, and make sure no moisture affects it. Nevertheless, small parts of the surface come off in several places, leaving unsightly spots.

My question is: does anyone have experience with whether Ikea accepts claims in such cases and how successful these usually are? Are there specific conditions that need to be met, or is it more of a case-by-case decision?

I am quite sure that there has been no improper handling and that it is more likely a material or manufacturing defect. However, I don’t want to just assume this, but rather seek advice here on the best way to proceed.

Looking forward to your tips and information!

In general, Ikea is quite accommodating with complaints regarding paint surfaces, but the likelihood of success heavily depends on proving that there was no external damage. The finish on Kallax units is usually melamine-based or laminate-coated. If peeling occurs despite proper care (no harsh cleaners, no moisture), this often indicates production defects or damage during transport.

I recommend documenting carefully: when the defects first appeared, what kind of maintenance was done (frequency, cleaning agents), and whether any mechanical impact might have occurred. Wear and tear on these shelves typically starts much later—not after just a few months.

Have you also checked that no physical impact happened? Sometimes small cracks in the laminate film or print are present beforehand and only become noticeable later. What exact type of care products do you use? Are the affected spots on high-use surfaces (e.g., shelves) or on less exposed areas like the back or inside panels?

Oh man, that really sounds frustrating! 🙂

But don’t worry – Ikea generally has a good reputation when it comes to handling complaints, especially if you clearly explain how you’ve taken care of the product. Legally, there is usually a 2-year warranty on defects, and paint peeling within a few months is definitely not normal wear and tear.

My advice: Approach customer service politely but firmly and present your case clearly. Keep it straightforward—highlight your care instructions and include photos if they ask for them.

Fingers crossed they’ll replace it for you!

From a factual perspective: Kallax shelves are made of particleboard with a foil or melamine coating. Generally, this surface is resistant to normal wear and tear.

Peeling of the surface can have several causes:

- Manufacturing defects in the coating
- Moisture penetration through damaged edges or scratches
- Mechanical impact from sudden forces

When making a claim, it is important to be well prepared:

1. Provide the purchase receipt and, if possible, a proof of storage
2. Clearly demonstrate that normal care was applied – ideally in writing or with evidence
3. Precisely identify the defect location and indicate the timeline of occurrence

The success rate for genuine production defects is over 70%. However, it decreases significantly in cases of improper use.

In short: Ikea takes claims seriously, especially regarding paint damage when there is no fault on your part. Proof of purchase and evidence of proper care are important.

If you haven’t handled the shelf too roughly, you can expect a replacement or refund.

I would like to add that storage before use and the transportation route can also play a role. Sometimes the board absorbs moisture due to improper storage, which later shows as damage to the finish.

If you purchased the shelf online, returning it should also be no problem in case of a material defect. Document the damage carefully and obtain written confirmation from Ikea. This is the only way to be on the safe side.

A tip: read the warranty terms on the Ikea website carefully – they list exactly the cases that are covered.
