I am currently considering furnishing our bedroom with an Ikea PAX wardrobe and would like to know which PAX combinations have proven especially useful for families. I am particularly interested in dimensions, interior fittings (e.g., drawers, hanging rails, shelves), and possibly special solutions for extra storage preferred by families. It would also be helpful to learn whether people tend to combine several smaller PAX wardrobes or prefer fewer, larger units.
Since storage and organization are important topics for families and their needs can be quite specific, I am hoping for concrete experiences and recommendations. What solutions work well for keeping children’s clothes, shoes, as well as bed linen or toys neatly organized? Are there any useful planning and implementation tips that tend to be overlooked when using Ikea?
I look forward to your feedback and thank you in advance!

Hello,
The following PAX configuration has proven particularly practical for families:
- A combination of two to three cabinets, each 100 cm (40 inches) wide and approximately 236 cm (93 inches) high
- Interior layout with multiple clothing rods at adjustable heights for children’s and adults’ clothing
- Integration of drawer inserts and shelves for shoes and toys
- Use of sliding doors to save space in smaller rooms
These combinations allow flexible adaptation to changing needs, are durable, and provide good organization for family clothing and other items. It is important to carefully plan measurements before purchase and to use interior fittings to optimize storage space.
For children, I recommend installing at least one section with lower clothing rods so that they can reach their clothes independently.

Hello joncarmelo,
I’m happy to approach this topic in a more structured way, and I have experience with PAX through our family setup. When it comes to families, it’s worth planning in three steps:
1. Measure the room precisely, including light switches and door clearances.
2. Analyze the needs of family members – clothing for adults, children, seasonal storage, etc.
3. Plan the interior fittings modularly:
- For children, lower hanging rods are useful, often combined with large drawers for underwear and toys.
- Adults need more hanging space for suits and longer garments, possibly a wardrobe lift solution in tall cabinets.
- Use shelves or flaps to fill gaps for bedding and blankets.
Common mistakes:
- Too few drawers, causing small items to become disorganized quickly.
- Wrong door choice – sliding doors save space but are harder to retrofit.
- Cabinets that are too tall and become hard to access.
My tip:
Combine two narrower cabinets (e.g., 100 cm (40 inches)) rather than one very wide one; this makes organization and rearranging easier.
In summary:
- 100 cm (40 inches) depth is standard, height preferably 201 or 236 cm (about 79 or 93 inches)
- Interior should be as flexible and adjustable as possible
- Choose doors depending on room size
- Accessories like a wardrobe lift can be useful
If you have any questions about planning or product recommendations, just let me know!

BASTIANTI12 Apr 2017 07:51Hi everyone!
I really like PAX – especially for families! We have a combination of two 100 cm (40 inches) wide wardrobes with sliding doors, which saves us a lot of space!
Our children love that they can easily reach their clothes because the hanging rails are mounted low. We also installed plenty of drawers for shoes, underwear, and toys. A great tip from me: use drawer organizers, they keep everything very tidy and save time in the morning when getting dressed!
Something else that helps a lot: additional hooks or small baskets on the inside of the doors.
So: go for it! PAX is incredibly flexible. Just try the planning tools to make sure the combination fits perfectly. The investment is definitely worth it – we’re very happy with it!
