Hello everyone, I am currently planning to create a walk-in closet in my apartment and am considering using the Ikea PAX system as the main element. My question is: How can the Ikea PAX be best integrated as part of a walk-in closet to maximize storage space and flexibility without the solution appearing too bulky? It is important to me that both hanging sections and shelving are combined effectively and that the interior layout is adjustable. Are there any experiences with modifications, extendable fittings, or tips for the perfect room layout around the PAX wardrobes? Maybe also suggestions for lighting or optimal access? I appreciate any ideas and feedback!

My recommendation for a walk-in closet would be to choose narrower cabinet widths, around 50cm (20 inches), to keep the walkways spacious. Inside, you should plan a combination of drawers, shelves, and hanging rods for both short and long garments. It is also important to secure the units to the wall to ensure stability and safety.

My advice would be to choose rather narrow wardrobe widths for the walk-in closet, about 50cm (20 inches), to keep the walkways spacious. That sounds logical, but how do you define "spacious" in this context? 50cm (20 inches) is relatively narrow—does that really allow enough storage? I am genuinely interested in the efficiency of storage space versus walkability. Are there any practical guidelines on how wide the central aisle should be at a minimum when using PAX units on both sides?
From my experience, the central aisle should be at least 90cm (35 inches) wide, ideally 100–120cm (39–47 inches), so that you can comfortably take out clothes and also place bags or baskets alongside. PAX wardrobes that are 50cm (20 inches) wide provide sufficient storage space if well organized. The internal fittings of the wardrobes are crucial – by using drawers, pull-out baskets, and clothes rails at different heights, the space can be utilized optimally.
In this context, I would like to add that the planning of a walk-in wardrobe should definitely be done with precise measurements. PAX wardrobes can be up to 66cm deep (26 inches), which must be taken into account in the wardrobe design. Especially for use from both sides, the space between the wardrobes is crucial to allow smooth passage through the walk-in area.
Here is a recommended approach:
- First, measure the room accurately, including the ceiling height
- Plan wardrobes with different widths (50cm and 75cm) (20 inches and 30 inches) according to needs
- Combine the interior fittings with adjustable shelves and clothes rails
- Design access so that the doors of the PAX wardrobes do not interfere with each other, for example by using sliding doors or open sections
- Integrate lighting along the wardrobes or inside the PAX units, ideally LED strips that operate automatically with motion sensors
It is also important to secure the PAX wardrobes to the wall – stability is especially crucial in passageway systems, particularly when stacking or building the wardrobes vertically.

There is also the option with PAX to use custom interior components from third-party suppliers that are specifically designed for the system. These sometimes offer better solutions for shoes, ties, or small accessories than the standard Ikea modules. If the goal is a highly functional storage space with limited area, this should be considered in the planning.
Regarding lighting, I recommend a neutral light color around 4000 Kelvin (7200°F), as it resembles daylight and renders clothing colors accurately. For a sleek look, aluminum profiles can be used to guide LED strips along the inner edges of the PAX units.
