Hello everyone,

I recently modified an IKEA KALLAX shelf myself, but I noticed that the result no longer looks perfectly square. Specifically, after my DIY modification—where I removed some individual components and changed the assembly a bit—I realized that the dimensions of the compartments don’t fit exactly anymore; some appear slightly warped or uneven.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue where the KALLAX was no longer square after a self-made modification or adjustment? I’m asking because I suspect it might be related either to the assembly methods used or to certain design features of the shelf.

I’m especially interested in tips on how to fix this without having to take the entire shelf apart, or if there are known areas where DIY changes often cause distortions.

I look forward to your experiences and advice.

If KALLAX is no longer square after remodeling, this is often due to incorrectly installed screws or uneven assembly. Check whether all screws are properly and evenly tightened. Slightly readjusting the connections can also help.

Hello Jimpu,

I’ll try to approach the problem a bit more systematically.

1. Identify the cause: After a DIY modification, distortions often occur because the KALLAX is designed with a specific geometry in mind. If the structure is significantly altered in one area (for example, by removing cross braces), it loses stability, causing the shelf to warp.

2. Checking measurements: First, measure the diagonals of each individual compartment. If these don’t match, this is a clear sign of distortion.

3. Common sources of error:
- Removing or relocating braces and back panels that stabilize the unit
- Uneven tightening of screws
- Uneven pressure during assembly

4. Tips for fixing:
- In many cases, loosening the screws slightly, gently reshaping the shelf, and then retightening the screws evenly is sufficient.
- If back panels or braces have been removed, small additional reinforcements made from wooden strips or metal brackets can be installed.

5. Finally: Make sure that no warped shelves or damaged carcass parts are worsening the problem.

I hope this helps you a bit!

I completely agree. Additionally, I recommend checking the angles and joints with a protractor or set square. Since KALLAX typically has a rectangular base shape, even slight deviations during assembly can make the overall structure appear uneven.

Furthermore:
- When making adjustments, it’s helpful to initially tighten all fasteners only lightly, to shape the unit properly before fully tightening the screws.
- A warped unit can worsen due to temperature changes and humidity if internal wood stresses are not balanced.

If the back panel was removed during your modification, the unit loses a lot of its lateral rigidity. In that case, I would add extra cross braces.

A simple step is to check each compartment individually and, if necessary, use temporary supports to keep the geometry as close to the original as possible.

I can totally understand that you might feel a bit annoyed when the shelf suddenly looks very different than expected. ;-)

Sometimes it helps to place the whole unit on a flat, hard surface and gently push or slide it – often the shelf will settle back into a more symmetrical shape.

If you removed parts, it can also be useful to add small wedges or shims to balance pressure and prevent warping, especially on the base or back panel.

I’ve experienced this myself – my fellow DIY enthusiasts know the feeling: you intentionally alter a nicely designed IKEA system to create something unique, and then? The furniture rebels! 😉

Keep us updated on what you try!

As an addition: If you want to fix the problem, you should also check the tools used for the screws.

Several reports in forums have mentioned that overtightening the screws can slightly twist the components, causing the parts to no longer be at right angles.

The sequence in which the screws are tightened can also be crucial: tightening them diagonally instead of in a circular pattern creates less stress.

Those who are technically skilled can use simple tools like a spirit level and a protractor to better adjust or fine-tune the frame.

If necessary, a back panel made of thin plywood or rigid foam board can be added later as additional reinforcement. This often fixes many issues without having to rebuild the entire shelving unit.

One tip: mark how the shelving unit is best aligned during assembly to avoid repeating distortions.
