Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an Ikea Metod kitchen unit and am very happy with the glass fronts as well as the countertops. However, I am currently concerned about care and cleaning: What methods and cleaning products are really suitable to avoid damaging the glass fronts while keeping the countertops—usually laminate or wood-effect—clean and well-maintained?

I am especially interested in how to remove common stains like fingerprints, grease spots, or water marks without leaving streaks or scratches.

Has anyone had good experiences or tips on what to definitely avoid when cleaning these surfaces?

I’m also curious if there are differences depending on the type of glass or countertop material and whether Ikea’s own care instructions are sufficient, or if it’s better to rely on household remedies or specialized products.

Looking forward to your expert advice!

Hello SODUAN,

Thank you for your detailed question; it really helps to provide you with precise advice. Ikea Metod glass fronts are usually made of tempered safety glass, which is durable but should still be handled with care.

For cleaning the glass fronts, I recommend the following approach:
- Use a soft microfiber cloth or a slightly damp cotton cloth.
- Usually, plain water or a mildly diluted glass cleaner is sufficient (better avoid ammonia or alcohol-based cleaners to protect the sealant).
- This effectively removes fingerprints and grease spots without damaging the glass surface.

Regarding countertops, especially laminate or wood-look finishes, I advise against using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, as these surfaces are more sensitive.
- A mild dish soap diluted in water is usually enough.
- Wipe dry afterward to prevent water spots.

What you should definitely avoid:
- Rough sponges or abrasive cloths
- Cleaners containing bleach, as they can cause discoloration
- Excessive water on wooden countertops, as it may cause swelling

The care instructions provided by Ikea are generally good, but often less is more. Gentle cleaning with simple products will get you very far.

If you like, I can also suggest some home remedies that work well. Feel free to ask if you want to know more!

Hello everyone,

I would like to take the opportunity to go into more detail, as the topic of cleaning and maintenance for Ikea Metod glass fronts and countertops is more extensive than it might seem at first glance.

About the glass fronts:
Ikea typically uses tempered glass, which is more resistant to heat and impact. Nevertheless, the following points are important:
- The glass surfaces often have a transparent or matte finish, where grease can accumulate quickly.
- For cleaning, you should use very soft, lint-free cloths. Microfiber cloths are ideal here.
- Glass cleaners containing alcohol or ammonia can dissolve grease, but they may damage the seals or edges of the front fittings if you are not careful. It is advisable to use the cleaner sparingly.
- It is best to wipe in circular motions or from top to bottom to avoid streaks.

Now about the countertops, there are some differences depending on the material:
- Laminate countertops have a melamine resin coating. They are waterproof but should not be kept wet for extended periods.
- Wood-look countertops may contain real or veneered wood elements, which are more sensitive than laminate. Use a damp, but not wet, cloth here.

Cleaning tips:
- Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh cleaning agents, as these can cause micro-cracks and promote bacterial buildup.
- Vinegar-based cleaners can help with stubborn lime scale stains but should be diluted and used sparingly.

My personal cleaning routine is as follows:
1. Remove coarse dirt with a damp cloth
2. Spray a special glass cleaner very sparingly, then polish with a dry cloth
3. Wipe the countertop with mild soapy water and dry immediately

If you want, you can specify exactly which type of countertop you have, and we can tailor the advice more precisely.

I am also interested to know if the storage space behind the glass fronts needs special protection, as moisture there can also affect the surface.

Fingerprints and grease marks can be removed very effectively this way without damaging the glass surface.

Exactly, I’ve had good results with that as well. One more tip: always wipe again with a dry cloth after cleaning to avoid streaks.

Hello SODUAN,

I think it’s great that you’re putting so much thought into maintenance – that often helps to avoid frustration and damage. Especially with glass fronts, I was also worried at first about doing something wrong.

If you want, you can also specify exactly which type of panel you have, so we can tailor the care tips even more precisely.

That’s also my advice: The more precisely you can name the panel type, the better individual maintenance recommendations can be given. For example, I have laminate and have noticed that too much water can quickly damage the edges.

Also: Sometimes it helps not to apply too much pressure, especially on glass fronts. This reduces scratches and keeps the surface looking good longer.

If you like, feel free to share your experiences or problem areas so far, and we can discuss them further.

Keep your chin up—cleaning is often less complicated than it seems 😊
