Hello everyone, I am planning to get an Ikea Metod kitchen and have now reached the stage of choosing countertops. Since Metod countertops are often made of coated wood-based materials, I wonder what specific protection I should consider during use to ensure they last as long as possible. What care instructions are useful? Are there any special treatments or protective measures I need to apply to the surface to minimize damage from water, heat, or scratches? I would appreciate tips based on experience or expert knowledge!

The surface of Ikea Metod countertops is usually made of melamine resin or laminate. These materials are hard but not self-healing. Small scratches can be somewhat disguised with special laminate care products or furniture polish, but a true repair is hardly possible. It is important to prevent damage in the first place.

Additionally, I recommend sealing the cut edges if you plan to cut the panels yourself. Ikea often only supplies professionally sealed edges; otherwise, the wood will swell when exposed to moisture.

I have had good experiences securing the edges with wood glue or special edge protectors. This provides additional protection against moisture.

It is important to know that the Metod countertops from Ikea are often positioned in the affordable price range and do not replace high-quality natural stone or solid wood countertops. Their protective requirements therefore largely depend on careful handling:

- No direct exposure to heat
- Avoid prolonged contact with moisture
- Prevent mechanical stress

Improper use can quickly lead to swelling or discoloration. Maintenance with special laminate care products usually keeps the surface flexible and extends its lifespan.

That’s an important tip, thank you. Can anyone confirm if this is absolutely necessary? Does IKEA actually mention this? I’ve also heard from others that panels can be cut to size at IKEA.

Ikea usually seals the edges when they do the cutting. If you are cutting it yourself, you must make sure to seal the cut edges, otherwise they will swell quickly.

It worked for me! I had my Metod countertop cut directly at Ikea, and the edges were perfectly sealed, so I didn’t have to do anything extra! So: get your countertop cut at Ikea, it saves hassle and money on additional treatment! 🙂
