Hello everyone,

I am considering using my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets not in the traditional kitchen setting, but as shelves in other rooms such as the living room or home office. My specific question is: Can Ikea Metod cabinets be safely and functionally used as simple shelving units in other living spaces, for example without kitchen countertops or typical kitchen accessories? How do stability, appearance, and possible accessories hold up when repurposing them like this? Are there any practical limitations or other considerations to keep in mind?

I would appreciate any experiences and insights specifically related to using them outside the kitchen. Thanks in advance!

But why Metod? These units are designed as kitchen bases, and there are much better and cheaper shelving systems for other rooms. Stability aside, they often look out of place outside the kitchen.

That said, technically you can use them if you want clean lines and modular components. Just keep in mind: the design is intended for kitchens. For living room shelves, there are other options that fit better and, if you don’t need doors or drawers, may even be more durable.

Metod cabinets are sturdy modules. Yes, you can use them as shelving units. Simply leave out the doors or keep them open. However, countertops are not necessarily required. Technically, that works perfectly fine.

What about stability, appearance, and possible accessories when repurposing them?

The Ikea Metod cabinets are generally very sturdy, as they are designed to support kitchen loads and often carry heavy items. When used as open shelving, the doors can be removed. The cabinets come with various accessories such as shelf inserts or drawers, which can be used flexibly.

However, it should be noted that the fittings are optimized for kitchen use, meaning that, for example, rear screws and wall mounts are often designed for typical kitchen wall structures. For use in other rooms, additional wall fastening is recommended to reduce the risk of sideways tipping.

Regarding appearance: The Metod frames are rather simple and functional in design, which works well for minimalist or modern spaces. If the design seems too kitchen-like, experimenting with fronts and handles is possible, for example with flat doors or open shelving units. The color selection is, however, limited to typical kitchen colors.

In summary:
- Very good stability
- Flexible accessories available
- Additional wall fastening needed
- Appearance is minimalist and functional, not specifically designed as living room furniture

This should help in making an informed decision.

That's true, but that's where the irony lies: Metod is meant for kitchens, yet visually it clearly looks like a kitchen cabinet system. Do you really want that sterile kitchen vibe in your living room? I mean, it’s possible, of course. But is it practical or more like wasted potential?

If you love the look, perfect! But the design isn’t necessarily universal, and the effort to make it feel cozy can be significant. Maybe it’s better to simply buy proper shelving for the intended room.

Thanks for your assessments!

The aesthetic aspect matters to me as well, but I especially like the clean lines. What’s most important to me is modularity and stability. I want to be able to neatly store heavy items like books or electronic equipment.

I see wall mounting as sensible, thank you toril, that wasn’t entirely clear to me.

Are there any experiences with the usability of interior pull-outs or drawers from the Metod series outside the kitchen, particularly regarding durability and ease of use? I prefer everything to work smoothly, so no drawers that are too stiff to operate.
