Hello everyone,

I’m considering how to best increase storage space in my apartment and came across the Platsa and Pax furniture series from IKEA. Both systems seem very flexible and modular, so I can imagine combining them in my living or sleeping area.

My specific question is: What is the best way to combine IKEA PLATSA with PAX to maximize storage while maintaining a cohesive overall look? Are there any practical tips regarding dimensions, mounting, and possible applications that I should keep in mind?

I would really appreciate ideas and personal experiences, especially any advice on how to balance functionality and aesthetics.

Thanks in advance!

Hey GABRIELLEB,

I’m really glad you’re combining the PLATSA and PAX systems – they complement each other really well! 😄 Especially if you want to optimize storage space, PLATSA’s flexible construction offers options where PAX’s classic wardrobe systems reach their limits.

A tip from me: use PLATSA for areas where you need more open or semi-open shelving – it creates a more airy look. PAX, on the other hand, is great for wardrobes with hanging rails or drawers. You can create a corner solution where PAX forms the main part and PLATSA is placed around the corner or even on top as additional storage space.

For mounting, I’ve had good experiences attaching both systems together to prevent wobbling – IKEA offers suitable connectors for this. It’s important to plan the measurements very precisely so nothing sticks out or feels awkward. I worked this out very carefully with a tape measure at the start.

So don’t hesitate, go ahead and combine the two and explore the possibilities! If you like, I can also share some examples of how I implemented this myself 😊

That hits the nail on the head!

To add: PLATSA is basically a modular wall and built-in system that allows smart adaptations, especially in tight spaces, because you can work with various heights, widths, and depths. PAX, on the other hand, is a proven shelving/wardrobe system, mainly for clothing and larger items.

Important when combining them:
- Depth planning: PLATSA is available, for example, with depths of 35 or 55cm (14 or 22 inches), while PAX is usually about 58cm (23 inches) deep. It’s best to choose the 55cm (22 inches) PLATSA depth so that the edges align or can overlap.
- Stability: Both need to be securely connected; IKEA offers connectors that allow solid fixing.
- Access and usability: If PAX comes with doors and drawers, access should not be blocked by PLATSA. It helps to arrange the furniture in the room so that there is enough clearance for opening.

Regarding appearance: The color options in both series are similar, making combinations look appealing. For noticeable color differences, you can use covers or handles to create a unified look.

If you want to know more about material thickness, assembly, or interior fittings, I’m happy to help!

An important point when combining these is:
- Planning the depth: PLATSA is available, for example, in 35 cm (14 inches) or 55 cm (22 inches) depth, while PAX is usually around 58 cm (23 inches).

Regarding depth planning, I would like to add that in practice it often makes sense to choose the 55 cm (22 inches) depth for PLATSA rather than 35 cm (14 inches) if you want to combine it with PAX. This way, you achieve a flush front and avoid unattractive steps or offsets within the furniture combination.

Another important aspect is wall mounting, especially for PLATSA, since it feels less heavy and sturdy than PAX. Secure wall attachment prevents the risk of tipping when stacking modules or combining units into taller configurations.

I recommend making a detailed list of measurements before purchasing, including height, width, depth, and the position of doors, drawers, and shelves. This simplifies the assembly later on and clearly improves the usability of the storage space.

In short:
- Choose PLATSA with 55 cm (22 inches) depth
- Use connecting elements to ensure secure attachment between PLATSA and PAX
- Do not neglect wall mounting for both systems

This way, you can build a sturdy, well-planned storage solution that combines the modular advantages of PLATSA with the classic wardrobe system of PAX.

To summarize, when aiming to combine both systems for optimal efficiency, you should consider the following factors:

- Depth and width: As mentioned, matching the depths is crucial. PLATSA’s 55 cm (22 inches) depth is ideal for compatibility with PAX.
- Use of modularity: PLATSA is excellent for custom-built solutions, such as fitting into niches, corners, or under sloped ceilings. PAX, on the other hand, works well as a main wardrobe or for larger compartments.
- Interior fittings: For PAX, pay attention to appropriate interior fittings (drawers, hanging rods, etc.), while with PLATSA you can flexibly arrange shelves and doors.
- Connection and stability: IKEA’s connectors or external brackets are recommended. Please make sure to secure both systems to the wall.
- Appearance: PAX fronts vary; to create a uniform look, choose PAX fronts that match PLATSA’s color or use closed fronts on PLATSA as well.

One final tip: Thoroughly measure your space on site and plan with some allowance to avoid surprises during installation.
