Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy shelf from IKEA that unfortunately already has some noticeable scratches on the surface, which I would like to fix. I’m now looking for proven home remedies that could help to disguise or at least significantly reduce these scratches.
The shelf has a white finish, so it’s not solid wood. I’d prefer not to buy expensive specialized products and would like to know which simple household remedies actually work on these kinds of finish scratches.
Has anyone had experience with this? Which home remedies are really effective for treating scratches on coated furniture, especially IKEA BILLY shelves?
Thanks for any tips!

For clarification: The BILLY shelf has a melamine resin-coated surface, not a solid wood finish. Therefore, scratches mainly affect the surface layer. Home remedies like oil or grease sit on the surface and visually mask scratches but do not penetrate deeply.
For scratches, I recommend using a combination of a white wool wax stick followed by furniture polish applied with a microfiber cloth. This refreshes the white color and helps conceal minor scratches.
Toothpaste is a mechanical agent that works better on matte and uncoated surfaces.
It is advisable to clean the surface beforehand with a mild dish soap solution to prepare it. Please allow it to dry thoroughly afterwards.

When dealing with melamine surfaces, it is generally not recommended to experiment with oils or waxes, as residues can form that attract dust.
Repair markers or melamine filler from specialized suppliers are better options.
If the scratches are very deep, replacing the damaged panel may be the only solution.
I would start with a mild furniture polish and a soft cloth. If that’s not enough, small scratches can be concealed using a white wax crayon. It is important not to saturate the surface with water afterwards.
If real repairs are needed, special markers from the manufacturer are the safest option.
