Hello everyone,

I recently bought an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe and have been using it for a few weeks now. This raises the question: how long does an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe typically last under normal everyday use?

By "normal use," I mean using it as a clothes wardrobe with compartments filled on average, so no extreme overloading—just typical use for clothing, perhaps some books or smaller items.

I'm especially interested in how durable this piece of furniture is over time, whether there are experience-based estimates of when users might expect wear and tear on hinges, shelves, or frame components, and if there are common weak points that should be considered before purchasing.

I would greatly appreciate a detailed assessment or personal experiences!

Hey loma8,

great question and really important to think about beforehand! I’ve been using my Brimnes wardrobe for almost 4 years now, and every day too. Of course, it’s not heavy-duty use, but it holds regular clothes, bags, and so on.

What I can say is: the wardrobe is very durable! Naturally, there was a bit of adjustment needed at the hinges at the start, as they loosened slightly. But that’s normal and can be fixed quickly.

It’s important not to overload a single shelf and to distribute the weight evenly. If I had done that from the beginning, the load wouldn’t have been an issue.

So: If you use it properly, it will easily last 5 years or more without major repairs. My advice: check the screws occasionally, and you’ll be fine!

Good luck with your project! 🙂

Regarding the lifespan of the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe under normal use, the following can be noted:

- The structure is mainly made of coated particleboard, which is relatively durable when used properly.
- According to the manufacturer, the shelves can support up to approximately 15 kg (33 lbs) per shelf.
- Signs of wear such as loosening of hinges, squeaking, or sagging shelves usually occur after 3-5 years, depending on how heavily it is used.
- Common weak points include screw connections and edges, which may swell if exposed to moisture.

For long-term use, it is recommended to assemble the wardrobe on a level surface, regularly tighten screws, and avoid placing excessive weight on concentrated areas.

In summary, a lifespan of 5-7 years can be expected with normal, careful use.

That’s true, but I’ve noticed that with improper handling, the edges wear down quite quickly and pores can open up.

That was exactly my experience as well. I often overloaded it beyond the recommended capacity, and after almost three years, the doors already had issues.

What helped me personally was treating the wardrobe gently, regularly checking the screws, and replacing the hinges if needed, especially if you plan to use it for a long time.

I hope this helps! It’s important to keep realistic expectations for furniture in the mid-range price category.
