Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought the Billy shelving unit from IKEA and now want to adjust the doors because they no longer close properly and hang a bit crooked. The hinges are there, but I don’t find the adjustment options very intuitive.

My question is: How can I precisely adjust the BILLY doors to align them flush and even again? Are there any special points to consider, for example, which tools are best, how the adjustment screws work, or tips to avoid damaging the doors?

I look forward to helpful advice and maybe step-by-step instructions, as I don’t fully understand the mechanism.

Hello,

to properly adjust BILLY doors, it is important to know that the doors are fitted with concealed hinges, which usually have three adjustment screws:

1. Height adjustment – to raise or lower the door.
2. Side adjustment – to move the door closer to or away from the cabinet frame.
3. Depth adjustment – to align the door for proper closing and flush fit.

Tool: A simple Phillips screwdriver (PH2) is sufficient.

Procedure:
- Open the door.
- Locate the adjustment screws on the hinge, usually inside the hinge cup.
- First adjust the height, then the side, and finally the depth.

Important: Always make adjustments in small increments to avoid damage to the doors or hinges. If the door is significantly misaligned, loosening the screws slightly, carefully repositioning the door, and then retightening can help.

Hello bogiteo,

I would like to offer you a small tutorial on how to readjust your BILLY doors so they close properly again.

1. Preparation:
- Gather the tools: a Phillips screwdriver size PH2.
- Open the door and carefully examine the hinges.

2. Identify the screws:
- The top screw adjusts the height of the door (up/down).
- The middle screw controls the lateral position (in/out).
- The bottom screw sets the depth (how close the door sits to the cabinet).

3. Adjustment steps:
- Start with the height adjustment. Turn the screw in or out until the door is level with the cabinet frame.
- Then adjust the middle (side) screw to align the door straight.
- Finally, correct the depth so the door sits flush with the front.

Common mistakes:
- Adjusting too quickly; turn only a little at a time and test after each move.
- Not fully tightening the screws, as this can loosen the hinges.

If the door is severely warped, it’s worth checking whether the hinges are still securely attached or if the wood is damaged.

I hope this helps you 🙂

Open the door.
Check the screws on the back of the hinges.
Adjust with a Phillips screwdriver: top screw for height, side screw for depth.
Make adjustments step by step, closing the door repeatedly until the fit is correct.

That already helps me a lot, thank you.

Can anyone give tips on how to tell if the hinge might be damaged or worn out?
I have the impression that the door also hangs a bit loose and wobbly, even though all screws are tight.

With worn hinges, you often notice that the door no longer closes properly, rattles, or remains loose even after tightening the screws.

Check for cracks in the metal or deformations in the plastic. Squeaking noises can also be an indication.

If the hinge is loose despite the screws being tight, the hole in the wood may be worn out. In this case, using a wooden dowel or a small piece of tape in the hole can help improve the fit.
