Simon34Hello everyone,
I am currently planning my kitchen with IKEA METOD and was wondering which cleaning products are best suited for the cabinet fronts. My fronts are mostly high-gloss white, and I want to avoid them becoming dull or streaky after cleaning.
At the moment, I usually just use a damp microfiber cloth or mild dish soap, but I’m not completely satisfied with that. Are there any special cleaning or care products recommended for METOD fronts to protect the surface and keep them looking nice over time?
It’s also important to me that the products do not contain any harsh ingredients that could damage the paint or coating.
I look forward to your experiences or recommendations! Which cleaning products work best for IKEA METOD fronts, especially for high-gloss and lacquered surfaces?

Are there any specific cleaning or care products recommended for METOD fronts to protect the surface and keep them looking good over time? That’s a question that’s asked far too rarely, even though a lot can actually go wrong. I also think many people rely too heavily on harsh or unnecessary cleaners, which end up damaging the surfaces more than helping them.
For IKEA METOD high-gloss fronts (especially if they are lacquered), I strongly advise against using strong chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or alcohol. Basically, a soft cloth, lukewarm water, and occasionally a mild all-purpose cleaner without ammonia compounds are sufficient.
And honestly: anyone who thinks more intensive care products provide an advantage is usually mistaken. The high-gloss finish is delicate, and any “repolishing” with waxes or oils can easily go wrong.
My advice: clean gently and regularly rather than relying on high-gloss care products that claim to work wonders. Less is definitely more in this case!
I would like to contribute a brief care “how-to” for IKEA METOD fronts, as this topic is often underestimated.
First, the facts: METOD fronts are usually made of MDF with various surface finishes (foil coating, paint, HPL, etc.). For high-gloss lacquer finishes, the following clearly applies:
- Do not use alcohol-based or acetone-containing cleaners, as these can damage the surface.
- Mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents are the best choice.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or brushes with stiff bristles.
Cleaning procedure:
- First, remove dust or coarse dirt with a dry, soft cloth.
- Then gently wipe with a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water.
- For heavier dirt, a mild dish detergent can be added.
Important: After cleaning, immediately dry the fronts with a dry, soft cloth to prevent water spots.
For care (not just cleaning), I recommend furniture polish specifically suitable for painted surfaces that contains no wax to avoid dulling the high-gloss finish. Cleaning products like “Pril” (very diluted) often work well but should always be tested first on an inconspicuous area.
I hope this helps you!

I chose matte painted versions for my METOD fronts and maintain them with a cleaner specifically designed for painted kitchen fronts.
Such products are available in well-stocked household goods sections and are characterized by the absence of aggressive ingredients or silicones, which could leave long-term residues.
My advice: always test the cleaner on a small area before cleaning large surfaces – no matter how well the product is labeled.
Keep them clean and avoid abrasive sponges or scouring agents. The fronts will appreciate it with a longer-lasting appearance.
