Hello everyone, I have a specific question regarding the tools needed to repair Ikea Metod drawers. The drawer is not sliding properly anymore; it seems that a guide rail is slightly bent and a hinge is sticking. I want to do the repair myself, but I need a detailed list of the required tools, ideally with notes on what tasks each tool covers. Does anyone have experience with Metod drawers and can specifically say which tools are absolutely necessary? Not just standard tools, but also any special tools if applicable. Thanks in advance!
Hello Ottfried, your request is well formulated and practical. I have repaired several Ikea Metod drawers and can provide you with a structured list of tools.
The most important tools are:
- Phillips screwdriver (size PH2), as almost all screws on Metod drawers are fastened with this
- Flathead screwdriver, useful for releasing clips and clamps
- Lubricant or leveling oil for the fittings, to make sticking drawers slide more easily
- Allen key, often included in the IKEA assembly kit, for adjustable hinges
- Needle-nose pliers, helpful for clips or disengaged pins
If the sliding rail is bent, carefully use pliers to bend it back without damaging the material. Avoid using excessive force, as the rail might break.
If you want to remove the drawer completely, I recommend a soft surface to work on and possibly a larger workspace.
In summary: Phillips screwdriver PH2 + flathead screwdriver + Allen key + pliers + lubricant are your basic tools.

A question for teyosef: You mentioned the need for lubricant on the fittings and that hex keys are often already included in the IKEA assembly kit. Is using standard machine oil sufficient, or should a special lubricant be used? From my experience, cheap oils tend to attract dirt quickly, which actually makes the problem worse.
Also: If the material becomes brittle when bending the guide rails, could replacement parts be ordered directly from IKEA? Or are there alternative sources for these parts?

I actually recommend using specialized sliding oil or silicone spray, as these lubricants are less likely to attract dust and help prevent dirt buildup. While machine oil is good for lubrication, it can bind dust and dirt, which over time creates additional strain.

I suggest replacing heavily damaged rails before attempting repairs, to avoid further damage. Other sources are usually more expensive or less reliable, as Ikea uses specific fittings.
