Hello everyone, I have just started assembling an IKEA Metod kitchen unit and am facing the challenge of fitting the drawers with a soft-close clamping mechanism. The IKEA instructions for the standard Metod drawers clearly show how to install the side panels and drawer bottoms, but the removal and engagement of the soft-close clamping mechanism is not clearly explained for me.

I am specifically interested in how to correctly attach the soft-close fittings, the order of assembly steps to follow, and what to watch out for to ensure the drawers close smoothly and quietly. Are there any special tips for aligning the mechanism, specific adjustments, or common mistakes to avoid?

I look forward to your detailed advice or practical experience with this exact mechanism on the Metod drawers.

Interesting question!

First, I would point out that the term "soft-close clamping mechanism" is somewhat vague, as IKEA uses different types of soft-close drawer slides.

You are probably referring to the ones with side metal runners that include an integrated damper function. It is important to align the slides precisely horizontally and parallel. Otherwise, the damper will not work properly.

Additionally, the clamping mechanism should be fully opened and securely locked before inserting the drawer. Then, carefully insert the drawer and check if the damping works evenly when closing.

Important tip: The tolerances during frame installation must be minimal. Have you checked everything carefully with a spirit level and tape measure?

I did it this way:
- Fully extend the slides
- Adjust the soft-close dampers to engage
- Fit the drawer, adjust the side screws
- Check the function

If the damper does not close, readjust the slides.

Super exciting project! The soft-close drawers from Metod are really a great feature! 🙂

I can only recommend being patient during installation and taking your time for fine adjustments; it definitely pays off later. Especially when assembling the clamp mechanisms – you can really feel the technology almost „come alive.“ It’s just fantastic when everything works smoothly and the drawers close very gently!

Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work on the first try – persistence is definitely worth it! Good luck!

Thanks in advance for the initial tips!

@theo63: You’re right, I was specifically referring to the metal runners with integrated soft-close, which have been standard with the Metod series for several years. For the frame installation, I worked precisely and checked everything with a spirit level and a straightedge.

What confuses me a bit is the clamping mechanism itself, because I read that it essentially has a locking function that needs to be activated or adjusted before the drawers are fully installed.

Does anyone know exactly how this works? For me, it seems like the damper needs to be fixed in a specific position so that it reliably slows and locks the drawer later.

Thanks in advance!

That’s exactly right.

I have done this with several Metod drawers: the soft-close damper includes an integrated locking point that is activated with light pressure. Before fully inserting the drawer, you should fully extend the slides, set the clamping mechanism to the “open” position (usually by sliding or clamping), and then insert the drawer.

Only after the drawer is in place can you reset the mechanism to the active soft-close position. It then locks in place and provides the damping.

Pay close attention to the small plastic clips in the slide profile, as they can sometimes stick or not move smoothly, which will prevent the mechanism from working properly. It’s also recommended to treat the drawer sides with some silicone spray before insertion; this improves the glide and protects the mechanism.
