I have assembled my Ikea Metod drawers several times by now, but I noticed that they sometimes operate quite stiffly. The rails were installed exactly according to the instructions, yet the drawers do not slide smoothly, and often I have to apply considerable force to open or close them. Can anyone explain what might cause this? Could it be installation errors, material defects, or is there something that can be done to improve the sliding action? I have already checked the rails for dirt and made adjustments, but so far without success. Thanks for any tips!

I have experienced this issue myself. Sometimes the rail is not installed perfectly straight – even small deviations can cause the movement to become stiff. It always made me uncertain because the instructions are very precise, but even minor details can make a big difference.

A tip: Check again very carefully with a spirit level to make sure the rails are exactly horizontal and perfectly parallel. Also, the screws must not be tightened too much, otherwise the components can warp slightly. It might help to remove the drawer completely and readjust all the parts.

Check if the load on the drawer is too heavy. Ikea Metod drawers are not designed for very heavy items. Reducing the load could help immediately.

The smooth operation of Ikea Metod drawers largely depends on the adjustment of the soft-close mechanism and the drawer slides. Especially for the Metod series, these are usually metal drawer slides with ball bearings, which should operate very smoothly.

- First, you should check whether the slides are free from foreign objects; even small plastic pieces or dust can cause blockages.
- After that, incorrect alignment of the slides can be a major factor: they should be installed perfectly parallel to each other and parallel to the cabinet frame.
- The soft-close dampers are sensitive and can be damaged or misadjusted by excessive weight or forceful use.
- An important point is also whether the drawers are not installed “crooked” – meaning if they tend to jam or stick slightly.

Could you specify if the drawers are fully loaded? And whether you can use the soft-close function normally or if it sticks? Details like these will help me give you a more accurate assessment.

Thank you for the detailed response. The drawers are only lightly loaded, usually holding cutlery, small kitchen utensils, or lightweight pantry items. The soft-close function generally works, but it often feels like the drawer requires a lot of force at the beginning to start moving. After that, it runs somewhat smoother, but overall, I feel that the runners are not sliding properly.

I measured the runners precisely, and they seem to be parallel, although I don’t have precise tools for verification. Misalignment might be possible—the drawer is seated correctly in the tracks, but if it is hung slightly crooked, could that affect the sliding performance?

Does anyone know how much adjustment tolerance the Metod runners have for proper alignment?

The adjustment tolerance for IKEA Metod drawer runners is rather limited. The metal runners need to be aligned with exact parallelism within a few millimeters, especially in height, as otherwise the drawers can quickly become misaligned or stick. The lateral adjustment typically offers only a few millimeters to align the drawers properly.

- Check the mounting screws of the runners: they should be tight but not overtightened.
- It is important not to overload the drawer bottom supports, as they can bend under excessive weight.

Additionally, note that some Metod models have a small adjustment lever on the drawer front that allows minor front alignment. Using this feature might help achieve a better fit with the cabinet frame.
