ᐅ How do I install Ikea Metod cabinets with an integrated waste sorting system?

Haunon38Hello everyone,
I want to install an Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet system in my kitchen, including an integrated waste sorting system. My goal is to organize the trash neatly and space-efficiently – for example, separating plastics, paper, and residual waste in the same cabinet. I am particularly interested in the best way to install the waste sorting system inside the Metod cabinets, which cabinet types are most suitable for this, and what to keep in mind during installation to ensure the system is stable and easy to use.
Does anyone here have a good installation plan, additional tips, or experience that could help with the installation? The Ikea instruction manual is a bit brief on this topic.
Thanks for your help!

Hey Haunon38,
that sounds like a really great project! I recently built a similar setup myself and can only say: it’s definitely worth doing it properly and thoughtfully 😃.
My tip: use a 60cm (24 inch) wide METOD base cabinet with drawers for the waste bins. Ikea offers special waste sorting systems that you can simply insert into the drawer. The best way to assemble it is:
- Assemble the base frame
- Align the drawer slides precisely (using a spirit level is best)
- Insert the waste bins, paying attention to the holders
One important tip: double-check exactly which bin sizes you need beforehand – Ikea has different models depending on the type of waste.
Hang in there, it will turn out great! And if you get stuck, just ask here 😄

There are standardized pull-out systems from Ikea, such as the "VARIERA" waste bin, designed specifically for 60cm (24 inch) wide Metod cabinets.
Key points during installation:
- Verify the correct positioning of the runner rails
- Use the supplied screws and nails to ensure stability
- For widths under 60cm (24 inch), only single bins can be integrated; multi-compartment separation is more difficult here
For multiple waste streams, the 60cm (24 inch) cabinet with two side-by-side bins is efficient. It’s also worth considering the pull-out type (e.g., Legrabox or traditional pull-out), as mounting and load-bearing capacities differ.
If custom modifications (drilling, additional brackets) are planned, I recommend thorough planning beforehand and possibly a trial assembly without final screw fixing.

I hadn’t measured precisely yet because I assumed the bins would fit in somehow.
Can anyone also say whether and how the waste sorting system can be combined with cabinets that have drawers and hinged doors? Are there practical solutions for this, or is it better to install only drawers right from the start?
And one more question: How practical are the larger Ikea bins in terms of weight and durability with frequent pulling out?

With hinged doors, you often need to rearrange or slide the waste bins every time you open the door—which isn’t worth it.
The IKEA VARIERA systems are designed to be mounted on drawers. In modern Metod base cabinets, you can easily integrate, for example, 2–3 bins side by side.

However, the drawer itself needs to be mounted securely; otherwise, the runners can wear out or break under full load. I would definitely recommend metal runners with soft-close, as they protect the materials and your neighbors 😉
Good luck with the installation! It will be a great addition to your kitchen.
