FamajuHello everyone,
I am currently planning to solve the storage issue in my small apartment using Ikea Metod cabinets. My goal is to create as much storage space as possible within a limited area, without making it feel cluttered or impractical. It is especially important for me to design the cabinets in a modular and efficient way to make the best use of the available space – considering depth, height, and the interior layout.
Does it make more sense to go for tall cabinets with multiple levels or rather deeper cabinets equipped with lots of interior fittings and clever organizational elements? Are there any experiences with specific interior fittings that are particularly recommended for versatile use of the space? I would also appreciate tips regarding doors and their opening angles.
I look forward to your suggestions, ideally with examples of how you planned your Metod cabinets in small floor plans. Thanks in advance!

Mega topic, I love making clever use of space! 🙂 For small rooms, tall Metod cabinets with customizable interior fittings are a dream. Use baskets, drawers, and shelves so you can keep everything visible and still fit a lot inside. Tip: Adding multiple lights inside the cabinet makes it look even better!
Hello,
I would like to suggest a more detailed approach. When planning Ikea Metod cabinets for a small space, several points are important:
- Footprint and maximum height: Measure the height of your ceiling plus floor clearance precisely. Metod cabinets have standard heights—use these for optimal adjustment.
- Interior fittings: Combine shelves, drawers, and inserts with baskets; drawers help organize storage space better and provide easier access.
- Depth: The standard is 60 cm (24 inches), but there are variations with 40 cm (16 inches) or 37 cm (14.5 inches) depth, which are ideal for small rooms.
- Doors: Sliding doors save space, while hinged doors offer more options for handles and appearance. If you prefer hinged doors, be mindful of the opening angle to avoid collisions.
My tip: Plan using the online Ikea planner, but complement it manually with accurate measurements and consider your usage scenarios (what will be stored where?).
I’m happy to go into more detail if you have any questions.

I recommend tall cabinets because otherwise you would be wasting vertical space. Thanks, that makes sense. However, I’m concerned about whether the upper shelves will still be easily accessible. Does anyone use practical aids or other solutions for this?

How do shallower cabinets affect storage capacity and functionality? Would planning need to be adjusted because of the reduced depth?
