Hello everyone, I recently installed an Ikea Metod kitchen and am very satisfied with the wooden and laminate countertops. Now I am wondering how to clean them properly and gently without damaging the material surfaces or affecting the protective layer. I am especially interested in which cleaning products are recommended, what preparation is necessary, and what to pay attention to when dealing with stains or stubborn dirt. Are there differences in care between the wooden countertops and the laminate version of Ikea Metod? I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or proven methods so I can maintain my kitchen countertops in the best possible way over the long term.

For Ikea Metod countertops, there are primarily two relevant materials – wood (solid or veneered) and laminate.

For cleaning wooden countertops, it is recommended to use a damp, not too wet cloth with mild dish soap. Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive agents, as they can damage the sealant. For tougher stains, diluted vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 10 parts water) can be used sparingly. Afterwards, wipe down with clean water and let dry thoroughly.

Laminate countertops are somewhat more durable and can be cleaned with regular household cleaners, although abrasive products should still be avoided. Here, too, a damp cloth and mild soapy water are recommended.

In general, standing water should not be left on the countertops to prevent damage to edges or the sealant.

That’s an important point. Additionally, from a technical perspective, I recommend occasionally refreshing wooden worktops after cleaning with a suitable wood oil or maintenance wax to keep the surface durable and protect it from drying out.

This is less necessary for laminate since the surface is made of durable plastic. However, it is important not to place sharp objects or hot pots directly on the surface to avoid scratches or burn marks.

For more precise cleaning, I would suggest the following step-by-step process:
- Use a slightly damp, lint-free cloth
- Remove possible residues with mild dish soap
- For stubborn stains, gently wipe off residues with isopropanol or denatured alcohol (test in an inconspicuous area first)
- Never leave it standing wet; dry immediately

How do you usually handle adhesive residues or dried-on liquids? They can react differently on laminate and wood.

I can understand your uncertainty. I once had a stubborn coffee stain on my Metod wood panel that was difficult to remove. I carefully cleaned it with lukewarm water and a few drops of mild soap, then dried it thoroughly with a dry cloth. It’s important not to scrub too hard or use harsh cleaners, as that can really damage the panel.

Sometimes I also used a tip from Ikea: dampen a cloth slightly with a bit of dish soap, treat the stain, and wipe it dry immediately. That helped reduce my concerns a bit. Have you perhaps already tested how sensitive your panels are to cleaning products?

For me, regularly cleaning gently also helps prevent stubborn stains from forming in the first place.

For wooden countertops in Ikea Metod: Clean only with a mild cleaner and a damp cloth; do not use abrasive scrubbers. Laminate: Regular soapy water is sufficient. Remove any water residues immediately to prevent stains or damage.
