Hello everyone, I have a specific repair project: It concerns the Metod drawer slides from IKEA. These are known for a rather delicate construction, and some of my drawers have become a bit stiff or catch slightly when opening and closing after some time. My question is: Are there any DIY tips or simple tricks to get these slides working smoothly again or to repair them without needing extensive tools? I am particularly interested in whether it is possible to replace the plastic rollers, clean the tracks, or adjust them without having to replace the entire system. I appreciate any practical advice—does anyone know easy repair methods or clever DIY solutions? Thanks in advance!

Hello, it is best to clean the tracks completely: remove dust and hair. Then apply a small amount of silicone spray or another lubricant to the guide rails, but use it sparingly. This usually helps.

Hello DUOSKAR, your question is very precise, which I appreciate. For the Metod drawer slides, I recommend the following procedure for repair:

- First, completely remove the drawer to access the slides easily.

- Carefully inspect the running rails (usually metal with plastic rollers). If the plastic rollers are broken or heavily worn, you can gently pry them out with a small screwdriver and try to obtain replacement rollers (IKEA unfortunately does not sell these individually, but there are compatible parts available from third-party suppliers).

- Otherwise, clean the slides with mild dish soap; avoid using aggressive chemicals to prevent damage to the plastic.

- Afterward, lightly lubricate the running rails: I recommend a light fluid oil or dry lubricant, as heavy greases tend to attract dirt.

- It is also important to align the drawer correctly. Sometimes the slides become slightly warped, causing the rollers to no longer run smoothly.

- For bent metal parts, carefully straighten them with pliers, but do not force anything.

If you provide more details about the exact design of your slides, I can offer more specific advice. Is the problem present on all drawers or only certain ones?

Thank you for the detailed response, FAZAR. Yes, two plastic rollers on one of my drawers are indeed broken. Replacement parts from IKEA would of course be ideal, but I’ve read that individual parts are often not available.

I also think your advice on cleaning and lubricants is very important, as I really want to do this properly.

Currently, the problem affects two out of four drawers; the others still run quite smoothly. I wonder whether the rollers on Metod drawer slides can actually be replaced over a longer period, or if it’s better to install completely new slide systems. Does anyone have experience with this? Also with adjusting the slides on the Metod cabinet?

Hello, to address the question in detail: The Metod drawer slides are fundamentally modular in design, which makes repairs easier. However, IKEA does not sell replacement parts for individual plastic rollers, so these must be sourced externally or improvised.

For the repair process, I recommend:

- Carefully removing the rail to expose the rollers.
- Checking plastic parts for cracks or breaks. If damaged, rollers from similar telescopic slides might work as replacements.
- Testing different lubricants: silicone spray is good because it repels dirt. WD-40 can help temporarily but is not ideal as a lubricant.
- Important: adjusting the drawer within the Metod carcass, either via the mounting holes or by using the fine adjustment screws integrated into the system (if available).

The slides are not designed for indefinite service life, but proper maintenance significantly extends their usability. Repairs on broken rollers are possible if you are patient and manage to find suitable replacements.

Hey DUOSKAR,

I’ve also had trouble with IKEA Metod drawer slides, and yes, it’s a bit fiddly, but definitely doable! Here’s my DIY tip: follow the steps in order, and your drawer will work like new again:

- Fully pull out and remove the drawer.
- Clean the slide rails with a soft cloth and some soapy water – avoid harsh cleaners.
- Be sure to let it dry completely before applying any lubricant.
- I used silicone spray because it doesn’t attract dust.
- For broken rollers, I used small replacement rollers from the hardware store, which fit surprisingly well! Just pry the old ones out with a screwdriver and pop the new ones in.

It feels almost like doing surgery on your cabinet, but it works! With this approach, I fixed a squeaky drawer in five minutes. Give it a try — it often helps more than buying new parts. Good luck!
