alissa59Hello everyone, I am currently working on a project to securely and permanently mount an Ikea Besta shelving unit to my wall. My question is: which wall anchors and screws provide a lasting hold when installing Ikea Besta, especially on different wall types (e.g., concrete, drywall, brick)? I would like to know which combinations are truly recommended because it is important to me that both the weight of the unit and potential stresses from occasional repositioning or light impacts are reliably supported over time. Additionally, I am interested in any specific considerations regarding drill hole size, anchor type, or screw types that can ensure long-term stability in practice. I look forward to your opinions and experiences!
Hello alissa59, I understand that you really want to secure the shelf properly. In general, it is important to choose anchors and screws according to the wall material.
- For solid masonry or concrete, for example, nylon expansion anchors with screws that are at least twice as long as the anchors in both length and thickness are suitable.
- For drywall (plasterboard), there are special toggle screws or metal toggle anchors that spread behind the board to provide better support.
Regarding the drill hole size, you can usually follow the recommendations provided by the anchor manufacturers, who specify the exact drill bit size needed.
It is also advisable to install the shelving unit using a wall mounting rail or bracket to distribute the load as evenly as possible.
I hope this helps. If you can provide more information about your wall type, I can offer more specific advice.

Which anchors and screws actually provide long-lasting support when mounting Ikea Besta, especially when attaching the shelf to different wall types (e.g., concrete, drywall, brick)? This is a very important question! 😊 For brick walls, universal anchors with good-quality screws work really well! Especially if you want the shelf to be securely fixed for a long time, invest in high-quality anchors and screws—you’ll be proud of the result later. When installing, be sure to drill deep enough; that way everything will hold firmly! Good luck with your project! 👍

It is also advisable to install the Besta using a wall mounting rail or bracket to best distribute the load. Great tip! Load distribution is really important, especially with Besta. I once used regular wall plugs, and after a few months the shelf was slightly crooked.
My recommendation: For drywall, definitely use metal toggle bolts, otherwise it will become unstable quickly. For concrete or brick, insulation anchors are often not ideal; expansion or universal anchors are better.
With the right screws—I prefer galvanized ones to prevent rust—you’ll be on the safe side. 😉
In addition to the previous recommendations, I would like to point out the following:
- For brick walls, it is beneficial to use anchors designed for porous walls, such as those with a special expansion shape.
- Screws should be selected according to the anchor size and load, generally with a minimum diameter of 5mm (0.2 inches).
- It is also important that the screws are long enough to fully engage the anchor and securely bear the entire weight.
Make sure the shelf is properly positioned and aligned before tightening the screws to avoid later adjustments.
