Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Billy shelf that starts to squeak under certain loads. However, it only squeaks, for example, when several books are placed on a single shelf or when I move the shelf slightly back and forth. I have already checked all the screws, and they are tight. The squeaking noise seems to come from the connections between the shelves and the side panels. My question is, why does my Billy shelf squeak under certain loads? Could it be due to material stress, or are there other causes I should check? Are there any simple solutions to permanently prevent the squeaking without completely disassembling the shelf? I would appreciate practical tips and explanations, as I use the shelf frequently and the noise is quite annoying.

The squeaking noise often comes from friction at the joints. It’s best to tighten the screws again and, if possible, place small felt or rubber pads between the shelves and the side panels. This helps reduce the friction.

The squeaking in your Billy shelf is usually caused by tiny movements at the contact points, where friction occurs between wood and metal or wood and wood. Even with tightened screws, material stresses can develop, especially under load. Wood-based materials like the particleboard used in Billy tend to deform slightly under stress, particularly when the load is concentrated in one area.

To solve this issue, you can try the following methods:

1. Check the screws again and ideally loosen them slightly before retightening, so that the joint sits without stress.
2. Place thin felt or sliding pads between the shelves and side panels to reduce friction.
3. Distribute the load more evenly by placing items across several shelves to avoid point loads.

It is important to relieve persistent stress because otherwise the materials and fasteners might become damaged over time.

The squeaking often results from a combination of material stress and small movements between the connecting parts. The particle boards tend to deform slightly, especially if the load is not evenly distributed.

That’s a good tip. Additionally, using a light lubricant such as silicone spray can help reduce friction. You should be very careful to avoid getting any on the visible surfaces.

If the shelving unit is moved occasionally, make sure it stands on a solid and level floor to prevent squeaking caused by wobbling. Sometimes adding an extra angle bracket screw on the sides can also help to improve stability.

This is a key point. Localized load creates stresses that can have effects over time. I also recommend checking the joints to see if the dowels might not be fully tight or if there is slight movement. The squeaking can therefore also be caused by minor play.

It is important to apply the lubricant sparingly and precisely to avoid leaving stains or damaging the surface. Alternatively, clear wax (e.g., beeswax) can be applied to the edges to reduce friction.

If the shelf is older, a complete disassembly and reassembly with new screws and dowels, if available, is also recommended.
