Hello everyone,

I am planning to equip my bedroom with a new wardrobe using the idea of a modular system. Currently, I am interested in the Ikea PAX range, especially the versions with sliding doors, as these save significantly more space in the room compared to regular hinged doors and could therefore be better suited for smaller rooms.

So my question to the community is: Are there actually versions of the Ikea PAX with sliding doors that are particularly suitable for small rooms? What are the dimensions, the options in detail, and are there any specific considerations regarding installation or handling? I would also like to know if the wardrobe can be customized in a way that offers maximum storage despite a small footprint and if the sliding doors are easy to operate.

Thanks in advance for your advice and tips!

Yes, the Ikea Pax system is available with sliding doors. These are ideal for rooms with limited space, as they do not require clearance in front of the wardrobe. It is important to choose the correct height and width to ensure the doors operate smoothly. There are various finishes and colors available to suit different preferences.

The Pax complete systems with sliding doors are indeed a great solution for tight spaces. For small rooms, I recommend paying special attention to the wardrobe depth, which is usually 35 or 60 cm (14 or 24 inches) — however, 35 cm (14 inches) depth is not available with sliding doors. The sliding doors come in variable heights, usually up to 236 cm (93 inches). Proper installation of the running tracks is important to ensure smooth operation.

Also, a tip: both sliding doors run on a double track, which means that at least one door always needs to be slid to the side to access the contents. If you want to optimize accessibility, you might consider corner solutions.

How large is your room exactly, and what floor space have you planned? That way, I can provide more targeted advice.

Thanks for the hint. So, my room is just under 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches) wide and about 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches) long. The niche intended for the wardrobe is roughly 1.2 meters (3 feet 11 inches) wide and 60 cm (24 inches) deep. The height is flexible, with a maximum of about 2.3 meters (7 feet 7 inches). Since I want as much storage space as possible, a Pax wardrobe with sliding doors would be interesting, but I wonder if the standard depths from Ikea fit and whether sliding doors can realistically work with a depth of only 60 cm (24 inches).

Pax sliding doors are only available for wardrobes with a depth of 60 cm (24 inches); sliding doors are not offered for 35 cm (14 inches) deep wardrobes. This limitation is due to the door sliding mechanism. For a niche with a width of 1.2 m (4 feet), it is possible to use two sliding doors with the appropriate track. Heights of up to 236 cm (93 inches) are also supported by Ikea.

However, it should be noted that the doors overlap by about 2 to 4 cm (1 to 2 inches) to prevent visibility inside. Installation is somewhat more complex because of the track system compared to hinged doors. Overall, sliding doors are very suitable for small rooms since they do not require additional space to open.

Exactly, 35 cm (14 inches) depth is not suitable for sliding doors. 60 cm (24 inches) is the standard and works well. For the niche, that sounds feasible.
