Gilaure516 Jan 2018 09:12I am planning to furnish my small bedroom with an IKEA PAX wardrobe but have very limited space in terms of both width and depth. My question is: Which PAX options—especially regarding depth, width, and height—are best suited for very small apartments to maximize storage space without overwhelming the room? Additionally, I am interested in whether narrower but taller models are preferable, or if shallower, less deep wardrobes are more practical for everyday use. Are there any recommendations for door types and interior fittings specifically for small spaces?
For small rooms, PAX wardrobes with a depth of 35 cm (14 inches) are best suited, as they take up less space. You can choose the width based on available space, typically 50 cm (20 inches) or 75 cm (30 inches). Taller models provide more storage without increasing the floor area.
The PAX series offers two standard main depths: 35 cm (14 inches) and 58 cm (23 inches). For small apartments, I definitely recommend 35 cm (14 inches) because the wardrobe extends less into the room, thereby increasing the available floor space. The height of 236 cm (93 inches) allows for maximum use of vertical space without increasing the footprint. Regarding width, 50 cm (20 inches) is practical for narrow rooms, while 75 cm (30 inches) provides more storage space but uses more floor area. In terms of interior fittings, adjustable shelves, drawers, and clothing rails can be used flexibly to optimize storage. Hinged doors, however, require more clearance when opened compared to sliding doors, which are especially recommended for small spaces.
I find that hinged doors can sometimes feel a bit bulky in tight spaces. Sliding doors are therefore a real advantage for small apartments – you can place the wardrobe right up to the edge of the wall and don’t have to worry as much about the door opening angle. For the interior, I would recommend flexible solutions that can be adjusted depending on what you need to store. This way, the wardrobe remains functional and adapts to the room situation.
