I am planning to furnish my small bedroom with an IKEA PAX wardrobe but have very limited space in terms of both width and depth. My question is: Which PAX options—especially regarding depth, width, and height—are best suited for very small apartments to maximize storage space without overwhelming the room? Additionally, I am interested in whether narrower but taller models are preferable, or if shallower, less deep wardrobes are more practical for everyday use. Are there any recommendations for door types and interior fittings specifically for small spaces?

For example, more drawers for smaller items or rather more hanging rails for clothes? For mixed use in small spaces, I recommend the following arrangement:
- Top section covering about 30-40% of the height for less frequently used, bulky items (boxes, folders)
- Middle section with hanging rods for daily clothing
- Bottom section with drawers and bins for smaller items and shoes

This layout creates flexible organization and makes efficient use of vertical space. Additionally, drawers provide better visibility and access to smaller items.

Sliding doors are really essential when space is limited. Hinged doors are only recommended if there is more room; otherwise, they can quickly block access ways.

I have a Pax wardrobe with a depth of 35cm (14 inches) and a height of 201cm (79 inches) in my small apartment. It fits perfectly and doesn’t look too bulky.

If you need even less depth, IKEA unfortunately does not offer PAX units deeper than 35 cm (14 inches), but you can better organize storage space using interior fittings and boxes.

Sometimes it also helps to use the PAX as a room divider and build double-sided shelves if the space is open enough. This way, you gain storage space and enhance the sense of space at the same time – even in small apartments.
