Hello everyone,
I am planning to equip my bedroom with a new wardrobe using the idea of a modular system. Currently, I am interested in the Ikea PAX range, especially the versions with sliding doors, as these save significantly more space in the room compared to regular hinged doors and could therefore be better suited for smaller rooms.
So my question to the community is: Are there actually versions of the Ikea PAX with sliding doors that are particularly suitable for small rooms? What are the dimensions, the options in detail, and are there any specific considerations regarding installation or handling? I would also like to know if the wardrobe can be customized in a way that offers maximum storage despite a small footprint and if the sliding doors are easy to operate.
Thanks in advance for your advice and tips!

Another point to consider is the type of sliding doors used with Pax. There are options with glass or wood fronts. Glass fronts look more modern and can make rooms appear larger, which can be beneficial in small spaces. Wood fronts are more durable and offer a classic appearance.
The tracks usually run along the top and bottom, providing smooth and stable movement that performs well with daily use. It is important to ensure precise installation, especially in small rooms where space for adjustments is often limited.

Since I want as much storage space as possible, a Pax with sliding doors would be interesting, but I wonder if Ikea’s standard depths fit and if sliding doors even work realistically on a 60 cm (24 inch) depth. The 60 cm (24 inch) depth for Ikea Pax is indeed optimized for sliding doors. This depth provides enough storage space for shirts, sweaters, and even pants hangers. A typical Pax system with sliding doors offers an interior width of about 50 cm (20 inches) per section; with a 1.2 m (4 feet) wide niche, you can place two sections side by side.
As mentioned before, the operation is designed with a double track system, allowing access to at least one side of the wardrobe at all times.
If you prioritize maximum storage, you can also customize the interior fittings (drawers, shelves, hanging rails) individually and optimize the system according to your needs.
As a supplement: Installing the sliding doors of Ikea Pax requires precise work, as incorrect assembly can cause the doors to not slide smoothly or become stuck. Ikea’s recommendations include assembling the unit on-site with at least one additional person. The door tracks must be installed before the interior fittings, because otherwise the doors cannot be adjusted.
Additionally, in very small rooms, the door stops should be taken into account, as they prevent the doors from extending beyond the wardrobe frame and thus ensure optimal use of space.
In short: Yes, Ikea Pax with sliding doors is feasible for small rooms and offers good solutions, but it requires careful planning and attention during assembly.
