Hello everyone,

I assembled an IKEA KALLAX shelf about a week ago and have now noticed that it doesn’t sit flush against the wall. There is a gap of about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) between the shelf and the wall on one side. I already checked the wall – it’s not perfectly straight, but nothing major. The shelf stands on a laminate floor, which also seems quite even. It feels like the shelf might be slightly crooked or the back panel isn’t 100% square. Does anyone have tips on how to better align the shelf with the wall or reduce the gap? For example, using shims, caps, or similar? Or should I really just reposition the shelf completely?

Thanks for your help!

Hello Leose55,

If your KALLAX does not sit flush against the wall, this could be due to several factors: uneven flooring, uneven wall surfaces, or inaccuracies during assembly. First, I would recommend using a spirit level to carefully align and level the shelf itself. If it wobbles, small furniture wedges under the front or rear support can help. For the gap between the shelf and the wall, flexible sealants or narrow strips, for example made of foam or wood, are practical solutions. You can color-match or paint these to make them less noticeable. However, avoid trying to force the shelf into place by applying too much pressure, as this could compromise its stability.

Place furniture shims underneath as needed, and check the rear panel if necessary. Cover the wall with decorative moldings.

Hey Leose55! I had the same problem and can only recommend using small furniture shims, they really make a difference! 🙂 If you’re a bit handy, you can also glue narrow wooden strips behind the shelf to hide the gap very well. And don’t worry, this happens often—I think the KALLAX is very flexible if you apply some small tricks. Good luck!

The gap between the shelf and the wall is generally caused by two factors: unevenness in the floor or wall surfaces. To minimize the gap, you should first check the shelf’s alignment and level using a spirit level and correct it with shims. Alternatively, a narrow cover strip made of wood or plastic can be installed to visually conceal the gap. Using mounting brackets to secure the shelf to the wall can increase stability and prevent shifting.

Hello Leose55,

I understand that it can be frustrating when the shelf doesn’t sit flush against the wall. Sometimes even small unevenness in the wall or floor can be the cause. I recommend first carefully checking the shelf with a good spirit level and, if necessary, leveling it on the affected side using silicone or plastic furniture shims. If you like, you can also cover the gap with flexible foam tape or narrow strips – this will create a clean look and prevent dust accumulation.

If the shelf wobbles, double-check the screws and connections; sometimes tightening them makes a big difference. It’s always a good idea to fix the shelf securely to the wall to increase stability and prevent rocking. If you have any difficulties with setting it up or making small adjustments, just ask—we’re happy to help!
