ᐅ My KALLAX unit doesn’t sit flush against the wall – any tips?

Hello everyone,

I assembled an IKEA KALLAX shelf about a week ago and have now noticed that it doesn’t sit flush against the wall. There is a gap of about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) between the shelf and the wall on one side. I already checked the wall – it’s not perfectly straight, but nothing major. The shelf stands on a laminate floor, which also seems quite even. It feels like the shelf might be slightly crooked or the back panel isn’t 100% square. Does anyone have tips on how to better align the shelf with the wall or reduce the gap? For example, using shims, caps, or similar? Or should I really just reposition the shelf completely?

Thanks for your help!

Align the module using wedges, fill the gap with tile sealing tape, or install a narrow strip.

First, I would recommend using a spirit level to carefully align and level the shelf yourself.

Thanks for the tip, I actually did that. The spirit level shows that the side of the shelf near the gap is tilted by about 1° (degree). However, I’m unsure if I can still correct the angle during assembly without taking everything apart again.

Using mounting brackets to attach the shelf to the wall can increase stability and prevent shifting.

Can I install the mounting brackets afterward, or is that rather difficult? From experience, the shelf parts usually fit together loosely, right?

Also, a quick question: What is the maximum gap size before the shelf might encounter problems? I don’t want the gap to make it unstable.

A tilt of 1° is minor, but over time this small error can usually be compensated by using furniture shims without modifying the structure.

Mounting brackets can be added later if the back of the KALLAX is accessible. It is important to use suitable screws and drill carefully to avoid damaging the veneer. Although the shelf is assembled by slotting parts together, it should be stable enough to allow this.

A gap of up to 2 cm (about 0.8 inches) is usually not an issue, as long as the shelf remains otherwise stable. Larger gaps can cause wobbling over time, especially when the shelf is loaded.

Use shims and mounting brackets to ensure the shelf is securely installed.
