Hello everyone, I noticed that one of the doors on my Ikea Pax sliding door system is rubbing when opening and closing and no longer moves smoothly along the track. Specifically, it seems that the door is catching on the lower track near the frame and feels a bit stiff, which wasn’t the case before. I would like to try fixing this myself but am not sure how to approach the common causes. What steps are recommended to identify the issue and restore smooth operation of the mechanism without damaging the door or the track? Additionally, any advice on replacing rollers or sliding tracks would be helpful – are compatible spare parts available from Ikea, and how complicated is the replacement process? Thanks in advance for any useful tips!

First, lift the door off the track. Then check the rollers to see if they are firmly fixed or dirty. If they are dirty, clean them; if damaged, replacement rollers can be ordered and easily swapped. Make sure to pay attention to the correct position of the adjustment screws.

That’s already a great start – I’d like to add a few details: For Pax sliding doors, there are rollers both at the top and bottom, which can be adjusted using set screws. If the door is scraping, it’s often because the door isn’t hanging exactly centered in the track, causing it to rub against the frame or track edge.

I would recommend carefully removing the door (having a second person helps since the doors can be quite heavy). After that, thoroughly clean the tracks from dust and debris, as this is a common cause for rollers getting stuck.

Replacing the rollers is relatively simple: usually no special tools are needed, just a screwdriver. Ikea offers replacement rollers as original parts, which I found very convenient. When installing, make sure the screws are neither too tight nor too loose, so the rollers can spin freely and the door will operate smoothly.

I find it interesting how there is often an expectation that IKEA furniture is built to last forever, yet it’s frequently simple plastic rollers that fail after some time. I would argue that the entire sliding door system of Pax is not a mechanical masterpiece. In my opinion, IKEA significantly cuts corners on quality here, and you should be prepared to do some DIY work yourself or look for small, practical upgrades—such as higher-quality rollers from third-party suppliers.

Personally, I upgraded my sliding doors with metal rollers because the additional cost of about 20 euros saved me a lot of hassle in the long run. Just a thought: if you really want to “repair” this, you should be ready to replace more than just the original parts.

I see it a bit differently. Yes, Ikea uses inexpensive components for Pax, but precisely the modular system makes it easy to carry out repairs or modifications yourself.

It is important to carefully follow the correct steps during assembly and adjustment: For example, when adjusting the doors, you should always make small screwdriver turns and calibrate the rollers at the top and bottom so that the doors run perfectly parallel to the frame.

A common mistake among DIY repairers is that the doors end up hanging crooked because one roller is either too loose or too tight. This causes friction and rubbing.

So my advice is to adjust patiently and, if necessary, get replacement parts from Ikea. I find the system quite intuitive and also repair-friendly.

I have a small tip that I used myself: If the doors are sticking, it can help to remove the roller track from the rail and lightly lubricate it with some silicone spray or graphite powder. This significantly reduces friction and allows the doors to glide more smoothly again.

I agree – it’s worth turning the adjustment screws very gently until the door runs centered and straight.

And another quick tip: If you buy replacement rollers, make sure to note the exact original Ikea designation so the part fits. From my experience, some rollers look similar but don’t fit perfectly, which can cause issues.
