Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to equip our new kitchen with Ikea Metod cabinets, focusing mainly on the version with sliding doors. My main question concerns the practical installation and the claimed space-saving benefits of these sliding door systems.

I understand that sliding doors theoretically save more space compared to conventional doors because they do not swing outward. However, I wonder if this really works as smoothly in practice, especially considering the effort and complexity of the installation.

- How easy or difficult is the assembly and installation of sliding doors on Metod units in reality?
- Are there any specific tips on how to install the doors in a particularly space-efficient and practical way without compromising comfort?
- What challenges have you experienced during installation, especially in smaller kitchen spaces?

I look forward to objective and practical feedback that will help me carry out my project with as few mistakes as possible.

So, I’ll start with a somewhat provocative statement: In my opinion, the supposed “space-saving” advantage of sliding doors on Ikea Metod cabinets is highly overrated.

While that is technically correct, in practice sliding doors are often more difficult to install and don’t always provide the most convenient access to the inside of the cabinet.

Sure, if the room is tight, any outward-opening door can be annoying, but it should not be forgotten that the track system and sliding door mechanism require extra depth. This means there is often less storage space available behind the door.

Additionally, sliding doors are more prone to defects, especially if the tracks are not perfectly aligned. I don’t mean to cause alarm, but for me, hinged doors remain the more practical solution.

For better context:

The Ikea Metod cabinet with sliding doors is designed modularly and can be especially advantageous in tight kitchen spaces.

The following points regarding installation and space-saving are relevant:

- Installation: The sliding doors are mounted on guide rails that require precise alignment. According to the Ikea instructions, an exact measurement and fixing of the rails with appropriate screws are necessary for smooth operation.
- Space-saving: Since the doors slide, you save the clearance area needed for hinged or swinging doors. This is beneficial, for example, in narrow kitchen layouts.
- Limitations: The storage compartments behind the sliding doors cannot be fully opened, so only one side of the cabinet’s contents can be accessed at a time.
- Mechanism: As GEKAU51 pointed out, the mechanism needs some space in depth for the guide rails, but this is usually less than the swing radius of a regular door.

In summary, installation is more demanding due to the guides compared to hinged or folding doors, but the space-saving advantage becomes clear, especially in confined areas.

I would like to add some insights from the perspective of the installation process and potential pitfalls, as I assembled a complete kitchen run with Metod cabinets and sliding doors myself last year.

Basically, the assessment is correct that focus and careful attention are essential during installation:

- First, the cabinet carcass must be perfectly straight and square; otherwise, the doors will bind or not slide smoothly.
- The running rails are well designed, but variations in material thickness or uneven floors can cause issues.
- When fastening the rails, be sure to use the correct screws that fit the pre-drilled wood holes to ensure the rails hold securely.
- I recommend hanging the doors initially without fully tightening them, then check the guidance several times (smooth operation) and make slight adjustments if necessary.
- The doors must be perfectly aligned because otherwise, any installed sealing strips will wear out quickly.

Exactly that: The space savings become noticeable particularly when there is a narrow passageway directly in front of the doors. This way, you save clearance for door opening that would otherwise block a hallway or adjacent room.

One more tip: If the doors do not slide smoothly, a light lubrication of the running rails (e.g., silicone spray) can help, but use it sparingly to avoid dirt accumulation.

I hope this is helpful. Can you tell me how tight your space is? Then I can give more targeted advice.

Interesting viewpoints!

I want to add another aspect that, in my opinion, is often overlooked: everyday practical use.

That is true, but it says little about the practical advantages or disadvantages. An important point is ergonomics: sliding doors do not allow full access to the entire cabinet interior at once, but if, for example, you arrange pots or pantry items so that frequently used things are easily reachable, it can work quite well.

Furthermore, I see another benefit: sliding doors can be a real advantage in small kitchens with an island or narrow walkways, as the open doors do not require any clearance space.

My recommendation would be not to base the decision solely on installation effort or perceived convenience, but mainly on the spatial situation and usage habits.

Is there a specific space constraint that motivates you to choose sliding doors, or is it more of a design decision?
