ᐅ What temperature range is the KALLAX suitable for in outdoor use?

Hello everyone, I’m wondering if the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit is suitable for long-term use outdoors. I’m especially interested in knowing what temperature ranges the KALLAX wood or MDF panels can withstand without sustaining permanent damage. Are there any experience-based insights or official information on this? I’m asking because I have a terrace where temperatures can drop below -10°C (14°F) in winter and can rise above 30°C (86°F) in summer. Would the shelf remain stable under these conditions over time, or should I consider a different option? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Unfortunately, there is no official temperature rating from IKEA, as the product is intended for indoor use only.
Thank you, that sounds reasonable. I am curious if anyone has used the KALLAX, for example, in a covered porch during transitional seasons with frost and occasional moisture? Did it make a difference? Can durability be extended with some protection?

Even with a roof covering, the KALLAX only offers limited protection against moisture. Temperature variations from -10 to +30 degrees Celsius (14 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit) cause the material to expand and contract rapidly, which can lead to cracks and delamination.

Sure, if you wrap it with plastic film and cover it, it will last a bit longer, but in the long run, it doesn’t make sense. It’s simply not designed for outdoor use. It’s better to use something made of metal or waterproof plastic 🍀

Let's be honest, who puts a KALLAX outside in freezing weather and then wonders what happens? 😀 Solid wood or MDF outdoors is about as practical as using an umbrella in a storm inside the forest. If you really want something weather-resistant, you should invest in a professional shelving unit or basement shelving made of steel or plastic.

I recommend keeping the KALLAX strictly in well-heated indoor areas. If you leave it outside during winter, cracks can start appearing at around -5°C (23°F). Moisture makes it even worse.

Honestly, who would put a KALLAX outside in freezing temperatures and then be surprised?
Well, I wouldn’t dismiss it that quickly—I think it’s good to clarify such practical questions before making a purchase. Especially since the KALLAX is often requested as a budget-friendly solution for outdoor use, it would be helpful to look at this more closely.

I’m more interested in how much temperature stress the material can actually withstand, including exposure to moisture. Has anyone stored a KALLAX outside just over the winter? Or in an unheated garage?
