ᐅ After a deep cleaning, the edge of the Kallax shelf has chipped off – how can I repair it?

Lugo30Hello everyone, I recently gave my Kallax shelf a thorough cleaning, as dust and dirt had built up quite a bit over time. During this, I noticed that a small piece chipped off one of the edges, which is normally covered with a thin plastic edge banding. The edge looks somewhat swollen, likely due to moisture from the cleaning process. Now, I’m wondering how to best repair this damaged edge without having to disassemble the entire shelf. Are there any recommended adhesives, sealants, or maybe even replacement edge strips that can be simply glued on? I want to prevent the damage from spreading further and, of course, I want it to look good in the end. I’m open to any advice, including personal experiences from people who have repaired something similar. Thanks in advance!

Hello Lugo30, I can well understand the problem because these plastic or melamine edge bands are practical but prone to damage from moisture or improper cleaning. Here is a brief repair guide:
1. First, check if the edge is loose in just one spot or if a longer section is missing.
2. If only a small area has chipped off, clean the spot thoroughly to remove dirt and moisture.
3. Lightly sand the surface to create a good adhesion base.
4. Use special edge glue from a hardware store or waterproof wood glue.
5. Press the edge firmly when gluing, for example with clamps or heavy books.
6. If it is not repairable, you can use edge banding: This is applied with an iron and visually replaces the old edge.
Common mistakes during repair: Gluing a surface that is not dry or using the wrong glue without waterproof properties. Hope this helps you!

Typical mistakes during repair: bonding on a surface that is not dry or using the wrong adhesive without water resistance. Good point. However, I doubt that simple cyanoacrylate glue (superglue) is the best solution, as it often becomes brittle and breaks under stress at edges. It is better to use adhesives specifically designed for furniture edges or laminate. Also, how secure is the pressing on such a narrow edge? This might be the actual problem: the edge may continue to chip off because the particleboard is damp. Has this been checked?

Maybe the edge is still chipping off because the particleboard is damp. Has that been checked? I have checked that – fortunately, the particleboard beneath the edge is not swollen or warped. It really seems to be only the edge itself affected, probably because it absorbed more moisture than the material underneath. However, I can only assess this visually and by gently touching it.
For repairing a chipped edge on a Kallax shelf, I recommend the following approach: First, ensure the surface is clean and dry to achieve a durable bond. Before cleaning the affected area, remove any loose material using fine sandpaper with a grit of 180-220. Then, apply a special adhesive designed for edge banding, which remains flexible and resistant to moisture. It is important to spread the adhesive evenly and clamp the edge with clamps or grips for at least several hours. Alternatively, edge banding tape can be used as a replacement, which is applied with an iron. It usually consists of PVC and provides a long-lasting, visually appealing solution. The material costs are low, and this method is manageable for DIY enthusiasts. In the case of Kallax, swelling of the particleboard generally only becomes an issue with significant moisture exposure, which you have ruled out.
