Hello everyone, I recently accidentally wiped my Kallax shelf with a damp cloth – to be exact, some water got on the surface while I was cleaning it. My question is: Can such an accident cause serious damage despite the laminate coating? How resistant is the material really to moisture, and are there typical signs to watch for in order to take early action? I would appreciate any experiences and assessments.

If it was only a small amount of water, you shouldn’t worry. The important thing is that the moisture does not remain for an extended period. Just let it dry thoroughly, and it should be fine.

Hello Melopin, your concern is understandable! Kallax is made of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface, which is generally quite resistant to water. However, you should make sure that no moisture penetrates the edges or joints, as the material can swell there. If you dry the shelf quickly, the risk is very low. It’s best to check the edges and back panels for any warping or discoloration. If that happens, you can treat it with sandpaper and wood preservative.

I have cleaned the Kallax with a damp cloth myself before, without any issues. However, you shouldn’t do this too often and avoid leaving large amounts of water on it.

Thanks for the info, that helps a lot. Could you maybe explain how exactly this melamine coating repels moisture? And approximately how long this protection lasts with regular damp wiping? I don’t want to accidentally damage the shelf but still keep it clean.

You're welcome! Melamine coating is a type of plastic film that is pressed onto particleboard. Its main purpose is to prevent moisture from easily penetrating the wood and to make the surface resistant to scratches and dirt. In everyday use, it holds up very well as long as the surface is not damaged or scratched. Frequent damp wiping is possible, but prolonged exposure to water should be avoided. So, make sure to dry it thoroughly and avoid water pooling.
