Hello everyone,
I am considering using an IKEA KALLAX shelf as a plant shelf because it is very flexible in its configuration and fits well with the look of my home. However, I’m concerned about whether frequent watering and the resulting moisture could cause mold or other damage to the shelf.
Does anyone have experience with using the KALLAX shelf as a plant shelf in terms of moisture issues? How is the material quality, and are there any special tips to prevent moisture damage? I would really appreciate any experiences and advice on this topic!

This thing is super flexible and looks amazingAbsolutely, and I can only add: A bit of “plant ballet” with a watering can and saucers really works wonders. Also, I use this self-adhesive film from the hardware store on my KALLAX underlining – very easy and it protects against moisture.
If water splashes, I just wipe it away immediately; it handles that easily. The shelf has lasted over a year without any problems and still looks almost like new 😉.

Moisture is caused not only by watering but also by specific air circulation and temperatureThis is an important additional point. Indoor humidity and temperature play a bigger role than many realize. So, placing a shelf in a poorly ventilated room with high humidity increases the risk of mold and material deterioration.
Therefore, I also recommend not placing plants directly next to each other to allow better air circulation and to ensure regular ventilation. This is the only way to prevent moisture-related problems.
For long-term use, I recommend applying an additional sealant to the KALLAX boards, such as a suitable wood varnish or waterproof clear coat. This will make the surface more resistant to moisture and dirt.
Additionally, it makes sense to never place plants directly on the shelf but always with a minimum gap or using coasters. This prevents moisture contact and helps keep the shelf in good condition for a longer time.

For complete assurance, waterproof shelves made of plastic or metal can also be considered. However, KALLAX is easier to customize and offers good value if moisture is managed carefully.
