Hello everyone, I’m wondering if the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit is suitable for long-term use outdoors. I’m especially interested in knowing what temperature ranges the KALLAX wood or MDF panels can withstand without sustaining permanent damage. Are there any experience-based insights or official information on this? I’m asking because I have a terrace where temperatures can drop below -10°C (14°F) in winter and can rise above 30°C (86°F) in summer. Would the shelf remain stable under these conditions over time, or should I consider a different option? Thanks in advance for any advice!
Great input – thanks! I will avoid using it outdoors then. I understand your comments about temperature and humidity. Maybe I will store the KALLAX in the garage or a frost-free storage room during winter. For outdoor use, I will look for alternatives. Does anyone have specific recommendations on materials or products that have proven reliable?

For outdoor use, sturdy shelves made of powder-coated metal or high-quality plastic are the best choice. Thanks, I will do that. One last question: How is the UV resistance of plastic shelves? I mean, if they stay permanently in the sun, don’t they yellow or become brittle? Or are there weather-resistant plastics that prevent this?Good question! Many outdoor plastics now come with UV stabilizers that significantly reduce yellowing and brittleness. However, some fading may still occur after several years of sun exposure, but the material usually remains stable and functional. For very intense sunlight, you should pay attention to the manufacturer's specifications regarding UV resistance when choosing materials.
