Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA Billy shelves: they are located in a room with relatively high humidity, and I’m concerned that the shelves might sustain damage from moisture over time. I’m particularly interested in whether there is a simple way to effectively protect the Billy shelves from moisture without having to completely rebuild or treat them. Ideally, I’m looking for a practical solution that requires relatively little effort and cost but still provides long-term protection. Are there any experiences or proven tips in this forum for protecting Billy shelves from moisture damage?

Place the shelf on legs, avoiding direct contact with the floor. Apply silicone to the cut edges. Replace the back panel with waterproof material. Important: ensure good ventilation!

Remove the back panel of the Billy unit and install a water-resistant plastic board instead. Then seal the edges with waterproof varnish. Add additional ventilation if possible.

Ah, the good old Billy shelves! ;-) If you want an easy solution with minimal effort, you can also use moisture absorbers that you simply place on the shelves. And if you lift the shelf slightly off the floor, the moisture will be less likely to settle. A bit of shelf tuning with a fun factor! 🙂

Thanks for all the tips so far. I find the idea of replacing the back panel or using water-resistant boards particularly interesting. That seems like a good balance between effort and effectiveness.

@semuneo: I haven’t mounted the shelf on the wall yet. I might consider doing that if it helps stabilize it and at the same time reduces moisture absorption.

I’m also wondering if the edges should be treated with something like parquet or marine varnish, as in my experience, that is where the greatest risk of moisture damage occurs. However, I don’t want to completely change or ruin the appearance of the shelf. Does anyone have long-term experience with such sealants?

Attaching waterproof plastic panels instead of the back wall is indeed a practical solution.

Regarding edge sealing: harder sealing varnishes or special edge seal sprays designed for wood or chipboard can be used on the edges. These are often transparent and provide protection against moisture. However, it is important to apply the coating evenly and carefully.

Note: Sealing the edges reduces moisture penetration but cannot completely prevent the shelf from being affected in consistently high humidity conditions. Therefore, room climate conditions should also be checked and, if necessary, regulated.

Yes, I treated the edges of my Billy shelves with a marine varnish almost 3 years ago. They still look good with no swelling or warping. The key is to apply multiple thin coats and allow each one to dry thoroughly. This way, it holds up very well!
