Hello everyone, I’m interested in the durability of Billy shelves with daily use. Specifically, I want to know how long you can reasonably expect these shelves to remain stable when used every day—whether for storing books, folders, or occasionally heavier items. Are there any experiences in this forum regarding the average lifespan with daily use, for example in an office or home workspace? I’m hoping for realistic feedback that goes beyond warranty periods and reflects actual service life under normal conditions.

I am also interested if anyone has experience with the effects of moistureYes, moisture is a critical issue. Particleboard shelving is sensitive to it, as prolonged exposure to moisture can cause the boards to swell. This usually results in unsightly warping at the edges and a loss of stability.
Tips to avoid this:
- Do not place shelves directly on damp floors
- Keep a gap between the shelf and any potentially damp walls
- Ensure good ventilation in the room; use a dehumidifier if necessary
If shelves are already warped, repair is difficult—usually the affected parts need to be replaced.

edisondan29 Jan 2021 11:22In summary, BILLY shelves remain stable for 8 to 12 years with daily use in typical household environments.
Moisture and overloading are the main factors that limit their lifespan.
Regular inspections and proper installation are essential for long-lasting durability.

Or does it generally remain rigid if the care instructions are followed? I want to avoid the shelf eventually warping and limiting its usability.

Does the shelf tend to deform over time at certain points, such as sagging of the shelvesYes, sagging of the shelves is the most common form of aging for BILLY shelves, especially when they are heavily loaded.
Regularly tightening the screws and avoiding permanent overloading help to minimize this. Otherwise, the structure usually stays rigid.
