Hello everyone, I’m planning to buy new Billy bookcases, but I want to gather good information beforehand to choose the easiest-to-maintain option. Specifically, I’m interested in which version or surface finish of Billy bookcases is easiest to clean and least prone to scratches, stains, or water marks in everyday use. It’s important to me that the bookcase does not show signs of wear too quickly after extended use and that I don’t have to constantly use special cleaning products. Does anyone have experience with which Billy bookcases are actually the easiest to maintain? I would also appreciate tips on cleaning and care! Thanks in advance.
The melamine-coated Billy shelves are definitely the easiest to maintain. They are resistant to moisture, scratches, and stains. Laminated surfaces are generally more durable than painted ones but should not be cleaned with harsh cleaners. For daily care, a damp cloth with mild dish soap is sufficient.

I would recommend the Billy shelves with a melamine-coated surface. That’s interesting, but what about durability? Melamine is scratch-resistant but not indestructible. Are there noticeable differences in everyday use between melamine-coated and painted surfaces that would affect ease of maintenance over the long term? Does anyone have long-term experience?
I can confirm long-term experience with melamine-coated Billy shelves. After several years, there are hardly any signs of wear, as long as no sharp-edged objects are placed directly on them. Painted surfaces tend to show fine scratches more quickly and reveal fingerprints more clearly, but they often look more attractive. Melamine is definitely easier to maintain since it does not require special polish or paint care.

Are there practical differences between melamine-coated and lacquered surfaces in everyday use that also affect ease of maintenance over the long term?Good question! That’s exactly what I want to know. Do you have any insights on how moisture affects these surfaces, for example, from occasional water splashes or in rooms with higher humidity? Could melamine coating offer advantages in such cases?
