Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some IKEA Besta cabinets and want to make sure I care for the surfaces properly to keep them durable and looking good. I’m especially interested in which cleaning products are suitable for the smooth, coated surfaces and which ones should be avoided to prevent scratches or dull spots.

Additionally, it would be helpful to know if there are any special care tips to protect the material longer—especially in everyday situations with moisture or grease stains from the kitchen.

How do you handle this? Do you use specific products for the BESTA surfaces, or is wiping them down with a damp cloth enough? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

To maintain the IKEA BESTA surfaces, I recommend the following approach:

- Use a soft, damp microfiber cloth for regular wiping.
- Avoid aggressive cleaning agents containing abrasives or solvents, as they can damage the coating.
- For tougher stains, mild soapy water or pH-neutral cleaners are suitable, which should then be thoroughly wiped off with clean water.
- Always dry the surface thoroughly after cleaning to prevent water spots or swelling of the wood or particleboard material.

In general, it is advisable not to use abrasive sponges or steel wool, as these can quickly cause scratches. These tips will help preserve the original appearance of the surface over time.

Hello Naligo,

your question about the proper care of BESTA surfaces addresses an important topic, as coated surfaces can quickly react to incorrect maintenance.

First, it is important to clarify which type of surface is involved: IKEA usually uses melamine resin-coated particleboard or foil-laminated surfaces for BESTA units. These are durable but not solid plastic and require careful handling.

Step-by-step care tips:

- Daily cleaning:
- A soft, slightly damp cloth is usually enough to remove dust and light dirt.
- Avoid glass cleaners or vinegar-based cleaners on light stains, as they can damage the surface.

- Deep cleaning:
- Diluted, mild cleaning agents, preferably pH-neutral, are recommended.
- Remove stains gently with a soft sponge using light motion; do not rub or scrub.

- Grease stains from the kitchen:
- A mixture of lukewarm water and a small amount of dish soap applied with a lint-free cloth is sufficient.
- Always wipe down with clean water afterward to avoid residues.

- Avoid scratches:
- Do not use abrasive sponges, brushes, or scouring agents.
- Sharp objects should not be placed directly on the surface.

I am still wondering in what environment your BESTA is located (living room, kitchen? Frequency of exposure to moisture or heat) – this also influences the optimal care.

Perhaps you could add some details?

That’s a good point. If your BESTA is in the kitchen, you should ensure that no moisture stays on the surface for long periods, as the particleboard can swell. Wiping down after cooking and not leaving wet sponges on it is important here.

I can confirm that. I have been using plain, lukewarm water with a drop of neutral soap for years and then drying it off. For stubborn stains, I dilute some vinegar essence with water, but not too often.

Also, avoid placing wet objects directly on the surface, as this causes the most damage.

In summary:
- Clean gently
- Avoid moisture
- No harsh cleaners or abrasive tools

This way, the surface stays nice for a long time.

Wipe with a damp cloth using a mild detergent. Do not use abrasive or harsh cleaners. Dry immediately after cleaning. That is sufficient.

Regarding your point: Coated surfaces like those on BESTA are sensitive to solvent-based cleaners and abrasives. These can damage the surface and, over time, cause dull patches or discoloration.

- Instead, use pH-neutral liquid cleaners or mild dish soap.
- Avoid alcohol-based cleaners (e.g., rubbing alcohol) directly on the surface.
- If stains don’t come off, a special furniture cleaner designed for melamine resin-coated surfaces can help.

You should also always wipe the surface dry after cleaning to remove any moisture residues.

Scratches are usually caused by harsh rubbing or using inappropriate sponges. Use only soft cloths (microfiber).

If you follow these points, you should enjoy your BESTA for a long time.
