anatol65Hello everyone, I plan to replace the countertop of my IKEA Metod kitchen but I’m unsure how to securely and permanently fix the countertop in place. IKEA does provide assembly materials, but many people report that these are not always sufficient or that the countertop shifts over time.
I’m interested in which methods you recommend to firmly and reliably attach the countertop to the base cabinets of the Metod kitchen—without gaps forming later or the countertop becoming unstable.
Is it advisable to use additional screws from underneath? Or do you work with special mounting brackets, glue, or other fastening methods? What is the best approach when cutting the countertop to ensure the attachment holds securely?
I would appreciate any advice on common mistakes when fixing the countertop and tips on proper positioning and fastening.

Regarding your very well-formulated question: securely fixing the countertop in IKEA Metod kitchens is indeed a topic many underestimate. The IKEA mounting brackets provided for the countertop are mainly intended for positional stability, not for permanent load transfer.
Let me briefly explain the process and the key points:
- First, the countertop should be cut precisely and smoothly sanded so it fits exactly on the base cabinets. Any unevenness can cause movement later on.
- The original attachment usually uses small brackets fixed from underneath to the side panels of the cabinet carcasses or to the panels. However, these are relatively thin and can give way under load.
- My advice: additionally use long wooden dowels or screws through the cabinet side panels directly into the underside of the countertop, pre-drilling to avoid splitting the material.
- Make sure the countertop either rests lightly against the wall or is fixed with spacers, so no tension builds up that might cause warping later.
- If the countertop is made of wood or wood-based material, I recommend reinforcing all fixings with wood glue rather than relying only on mechanical fasteners.
- For stone or granite countertops, it is different: typically, a silicone joint is applied and the countertop is not screwed mechanically to avoid stress.
To assist you better: What type of countertop are you planning exactly? And are your base cabinets already fully fixed and aligned?
Best regards!

The original attachment is usually done with small brackets from underneath to the cabinet side panels or to the trims.Exactly – and this is often where the problem lies. I recently documented this in detail, so here is a brief step-by-step guide for securely attaching a countertop with IKEA Metod:
- Align the countertop on the base cabinets, being careful around water connections and electrical outlets.
- Attach mounting brackets from the inside to the cabinet sides using wood screws (at least 4x30mm (1.5 inches)) . Note: Do NOT drive the screws too deep, as they may become visible through the countertop.
- For added stability, use at least two additional screws from underneath, directly through the cabinet sides into the countertop, pre-drilled precisely!
- If the countertop is made of particleboard or MDF, be sure to pre-drill and avoid using screws that are too large.
- To prevent moisture damage, if possible seal the cut edges of the countertop with edge protection or foil.

Is it advisable to use additional screws from underneath? Or do you work with special mounting brackets, glue, or other fixatives? My answer: Yes, definitely use screws from underneath. Glue can help, but it is not sufficient alone for a permanent attachment. The connection should also remain removable in case adjustments are needed.
One more tip: Using washers with all mounting hardware helps prevent screws from tearing into the cabinet sides.
Unfortunately, I often see inexperienced installers only screw on the supplied brackets without additional screws, which then leads to movement and gaps.
If you like, I can also provide a follow-up video explaining how to handle difficult corners or kitchen islands.

Drill pilot holes and use washers to protect the material. The cabinets must be fixed and precisely aligned to prevent any movement. That’s all.
