ᐅ How can I properly maintain the runners or slides of Ikea BESTA drawers?

LenfiHello everyone, I have a specific question about the best way to maintain the runners or tracks on Ikea Besta drawers. I’m particularly interested in how to clean and care for them to ensure they operate smoothly for a long time without squeaking or sticking. I’m also curious if there are any special maintenance products that are especially suitable, and whether there are particular techniques to use when caring for the metal or plastic components. So far, I have only wiped the tracks superficially with a damp cloth, but I’ve noticed they are gradually becoming a bit stiff. Does anyone have long-term experience or tips on how to reduce wear and tear? Thanks in advance!

I’m also interested in whether there are specific maintenance products that are particularly suitableI’m familiar with the issue when the tracks gradually become stiff and then that annoying squeaking starts – it’s really frustrating. In my experience, regularly cleaning the guides helps a lot, but not just on the surface. Sometimes I carefully use a brush to remove dust and small particles from the gaps before applying a special silicone-based lubricant. Regular oil can quickly attract dust and make things worse. Still, I often have doubts about whether this is really the best approach, especially for plastic parts, as some products can cause them to become brittle. It would be interesting to know exactly what others use here.
I think many people make maintaining drawer slides much more complicated than it needs to be, especially with Ikea BESTA. The slides are not designed for professional use but for everyday household use. Usually, it’s enough to keep them clean and occasionally wipe them with a dry cloth. Using special lubricants or oils seems excessive and can even be counterproductive. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve tried it myself, but liquids tend to attract dirt and ultimately cause even more friction. So my advice is: clean thoroughly first, let them dry, and avoid any lubricants. That’s it.

After all, the rails are not designed for professional standardsI disagree here: Although the Ikea BESTA rails are simple construction components, they also benefit from proper maintenance, especially if you want to extend their service life and reduce noise levels.
For appropriate care, I recommend:
- Cleaning with a dry, fine brush or vacuum cleaner attachment to remove dust and dirt from the rails.
- Using a silicone-based lubricant that is non-sticky and leaves no residue. These lubricants are specially designed for plastic and metal parts.
- Avoiding oils or greases that attract dust and impair the mechanism.
Do not remove the rails completely, only pull them out enough to access them easily. After cleaning and lubrication, gently open and close the drawer several times to distribute the lubricant evenly. Make sure any moisture is completely dry before maintenance.

In my experience, regularly cleaning the running rails really helps, but not just superficiallyThanks for the tip, that sounds reasonable. I haven’t tried using a brush yet, but that might actually help remove the deeper dirt.

Also: Is there anything to consider when removing the rails if you want to clean them thoroughly? Thanks in advance for any further tips!
