Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen using the Ikea Metod system and have come across a problem where I need your support:

How can I securely fix Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets to tiled floors?

My floor consists of glazed, relatively smooth tiles that are robust but don’t seem very easy to drill or anchor into. I need to ensure that the cabinets are firmly and permanently anchored, especially the base cabinets, so they remain stable under load and no wobbly spots develop.

I understand that standard wall plugs and screws are probably necessary, but my main questions are:

- Which types of anchors are suitable for tiled floors?
- Do I need to take any special precautions or preparations on the tiled floor before fixing the Metod toe kicks (e.g., specific drilling techniques or measures to prevent tile cracking)?
- Are there important considerations regarding the positioning of the feet or leveling?
- How should I coordinate floor fixing and wall fixing – is there a preferred order to follow?

I would greatly appreciate your tips, experiences, or recommendations for any special tools. Thanks in advance!

Hello Aymericmeo,

I’ll go into more detail regarding your question, as there are quite a few pitfalls when fixing kitchen cabinets, especially the Metod system, on tiled floors.

As a general rule: with Metod, base cabinets are usually not fastened to the floor but stabilized using wall brackets and height adjusters. However, floor fixing can be useful in some cases, for example if the floor is very uneven or additional stability is needed.

Regarding your questions in detail:

- Types of anchors: For tiles, special tile/ hollow wall anchors or metal expansion anchors are suitable, which hold gently and securely. It is important to use a tile drill bit (usually carbide-tipped or diamond-coated) to avoid cracking the tile surface.

- Drilling technique: Use a very low speed and no hammer drilling! It is best to place a small piece of painter’s tape on the drilling spot to reduce slippage and cracks.

- Preparation: If possible, drill into grout lines, as grout can be slightly more brittle. If this is not possible, drill very carefully to avoid causing cracks.

- Positioning of feet: Make sure all adjustable feet make contact with the floor and are properly adjusted, so there is no stress on the tiles and the cabinets stand level.

- Wall/floor combination: First, mount and secure the wall cabinets, then level the base cabinets using the plinths and feet, and fix them to the floor if necessary.

If you want to avoid floor fixing altogether, I recommend using special adhesive pads or construction adhesive as a supplement – this protects the tiles and avoids unnecessary drilling.

One more important point: Always check the load-bearing capacity and plan your fixings so that the weight is properly distributed.

Could you briefly describe your room situation (floor height, wall material) so I can offer more specific advice for your case?

I can confirm this from my own experience. At first, I was also concerned whether the cabinets would really stay securely on my tiles. I think it’s important to take your time during assembly and carefully adjust the height adjusters – these small leveling feet make a big difference to prevent wobbling or later deformation.

I had a mishap when I drilled into the tiles too quickly and chipped a small corner. Then I experimented a bit more with the drill in hammer-off mode and put painter’s tape over the tiles, as Filippo recommended, and that worked much better.

What reassured me somewhat is that with Ikea Metod, the main support comes from the wall, and the floor mainly serves as alignment guidance, which is a bit comforting if you can’t do any high-tech floor anchoring.

One more tip: If possible, try to drill into the grout lines, if the cabinet layout allows. This helps avoid unnecessary tile damage.

Good morning,

I would like to add some precise technical details to the discussion that are crucial when anchoring Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets on tiled floors:

- Drilling into tiles should be done with a ceramic or diamond drill bit to avoid micro-cracks and fractures.

- Before drilling, apply painter’s tape to the drilling spot. This prevents the drill bit from slipping and reduces the risk of cracking.

- When choosing wall plugs, pay attention to the substrate behind the tile.
- If it is a concrete slab, conventional nylon expansion anchors or metal anchors are the best choice.
- If there is a cavity structure, special cavity anchors or toggle anchors are necessary.

- Although Ikea Metod primarily recommends wall mounting, a ventilated plinth system is advantageous for uneven floors. Adjustable feet under the cabinets are used to set the units load-free and stable.

- In most cases, anchoring to the floor can be avoided, as tiles should not have a load-bearing function but rather serve as a flat, rigid support surface.

- Installation should always be planned so that the load is transferred through wall brackets, not point-loaded onto the floor.

- For wall mounting, always use appropriate anchors and screws for the type of wall (e.g., metal anchors for concrete, hammer-in anchors for calcium silicate bricks, etc.).

- A tip: Install the plinth profiles only after the cabinets are fully fixed and aligned to allow final adjustments.

Therefore, the most stable solution is to avoid floor anchoring and accurately align the cabinet systems via the wall.

Hello, to clarify your question and help you feel confident: The Ikea Metod base cabinets are generally designed to be installed without floor screws thanks to their height-adjustable feet. This is actually an advantage on tiled floors, as drilling is often not ideal.

My recommendations:
- Use the height-adjustable feet of the Metod system to compensate for unevenness and ensure a stable standing.
- Make sure the wall behind the cabinets is very stable and use the wall brackets and screws recommended by Ikea to secure the cabinets to the wall.
- If you still want to fix them to the floor, consider using construction adhesive or clamping rails that can be removed without leaving residue to avoid damage to the tiles.

Another option for very uneven floors is to place thin wooden battens or a thin OSB board underneath, allowing you to securely anchor screws without directly damaging the tiles.

What kind of tiles do you have? Glazed, textured, or rough stone-look? This can influence the choice of fixing method.
