Hello everyone, I am currently planning a major kitchen renovation and am using Ikea Metod cabinets because they are modular and flexible. My question is, how can these Metod cabinets be easily and neatly adapted to new room conditions or changed dimensions during remodeling? Specifically, I am thinking about shortening cabinet elements, relocating drill holes, or installing additional brackets. Are there any proven methods or tools you would recommend to modify the cabinets without visible damage or loss of stability? I would also like to keep the typical Ikea connection systems and avoid major custom design changes. Thanks for your tips and experiences!
Experience with cutting Metod cabinets:
1. Preparation: Apply painter’s tape to the cut edge to prevent the veneer from chipping.
2. Tools: A handheld plunge saw with a fine-toothed blade or a handheld circular saw with a guide rail is ideal.
3. Cutting technique: Cut slowly and steadily, not too fast.
4. Finishing: Afterwards, edges can be smoothed with a sanding pad.

I haven’t used plunge saws before, but the idea sounds good. Does it really solve the veneer problem?

I didn’t manage to get very clean cuts with jigsaws, and the veneer often chipped.I know that problem all too well! My solution: apply painter’s tape along the cut line and then saw slowly using a sharp, fine-toothed blade. It’s a small detail, but it makes all the difference. And don’t be afraid of the plunge saw—once you’ve practiced a bit, you’ll become a cutting expert. 😉
Regarding drilling and adjustments: It is best to use a drill press or a precise drilling jig to avoid incorrect drill holes on the Metod cabinets. Make sure to select drill bits with the appropriate diameter for the original connector fittings. When relocating drill holes, old holes should be filled with wood plugs or filler and repainted to maintain the appearance.
Most modifications to Ikea Metod are possible thanks to its modular design. It is important to use the right tools and take your time. When cutting, always use a fine saw and apply adhesive tape or painter’s tape beforehand. Use a drill guide for drilling and install corner braces in unused areas to maintain stability.
For built-in cabinets, it can be helpful to carefully remove and readjust the back panels to fit the new dimensions.

I’ve built quite a few Ikea Metod cabinets – the best tip for clean cuts is definitely ‘apply tape first, then cut slowly!’ Using a guide rail makes the cut a dream. For drilling, it’s worth doing a quick test hole with a small drill bit and careful planning. Oh, and always stay relaxed – the cabinets are more forgiving than you might think. 😎
